Operation Maple Syrup

Was going to call it Operation Furry Beaver  but between some here and their issues with beavers( the rodent) and the rest thinking it would be something similar to tractor porn...

As some of you are aware things aren't so rosy on the gun front here in Canada and the current government is not only looking to follow Australia,England and New Zeland down the drain but outperform them

It seems the plan is to ban stuff but grandfather owners( proof it's not about safety) so time to build my LR grail gun and wait for a change in government.

So looking to build a precision long range gun and still trying to decide on the caliber. So figuring that 90% of my shoouting will less then 1200M but want to be able to hit the 1 mile at the Shoots.

My first consideration was/is 7MM PRC but still pretty new and support is close to zero. Builder isn't sure how soon they can get a reamer( still looking) plus getting brass, dies up here. Still looking and seeing timeline on this

The builder suggested 300 PRC and also mentioned 7-300 PRC since I mentioned 7m. Quick check shows availble brass, dies and bullets for the 300.

So my question to you guys is what calibers should I consider and why.

you want a cal. that is fun to shoot low recoil the big Magnums are only fun to shoot for ten rounds then you are like ok I am good.. not fun so look at 7mm saum, 284 winchester with 180 grain bullets is what 90 % of all F class shooters shoot, maybe a 6.5 284 Norma like mine or a 300 win mag with a good brake or suppressor or even a 6.5 PRC then in a few years rebarrel to 7 PRC 300 PRC is a thumper burns a lot of powder...

I’ve been thinking about the same things for the last few days. Trying to decide on the ammo.

I came across the 7mm saum after we talk and you brought up a lot of excellent point to consider. I'm hoping to have more info Mon/Tues as to the current practicallity of the 7mm PRC in Canada. I feel the 7mm as a caliber has potential to reach out and touch with out being the thumper of the 300 and larger. From a reload point there is lots of data for powders and bullets along with a decent availible componets for the 7mm saum up here.

As you pointed out things can be rebarreled, lots of reading still left, hopefully more people will make suggestions.

  • 2 weeks later...

So after lots of reading and conversations with @Magwa decisions have been made. While I was hoping for 7mm PRC the newness along with no support up here till well into 2023 it will have to wait. A number of calibers were eliminated from the start due to lack of support, more to do with ongoing shortages but still not looking to buy a aperweight.

The winner was the 6.5 PRC, ammo ,dies and bullets are readily availble at two local stores.

So the rough details...

The stock/chassis is a MDT ACC Chassis which is locally made.

The action is made by Curtis for EM Percision(Canadian builder of LR and ELR rifles) and basically a Rem 700 footprint

The barrel is made by International Barrel(IBI) locally made. 26" finished length with an IBI 4 gill muzzel break. 1-7.5T, discussion with builder and Berger Bullets, once you start pushing 140gr and higher the 1-8 works but as a minimum and the 150gr and higher likes the 1-7.5

The trigger is a Trigger Tech Primary Curved PVD

Indeed lots of fun One thing to check just to make sure about the biggest bullet I can find for 6.5 is the berger 147 so unless you have a good quantity of of other well made bullets bigger than 150 I would recheck your twist rate as the biggest I shoot is 140 1 in 8 is perfect.... other than that wow great build OH one other thing is the barrel and brake finished at 26 inches or is the barrel 26 and the brake adds more length because you want the full 26 inch barrel the brake makes it like 28 or so....... good luck looking forward to seeing this beast....

Above 140 gr bullets the following are availble,Berger has 144,153.5 target bullets and Hornady 147, 153. The barrel is finished at 26" and the brake added to that.

I'm looking forward to us shooting it off your deck.

I used to think 500 and 600 were long shots before the fall shoot I thought 1200 or so was long 1000 seems like a chip shot now and 500 is just no challenge but come a windy day I will again be humble..... LOL the Mile is just a awesome feeling I know my gun is not the best for it but it is capable under the right conditions If I was going to shoot a mile and further I would have a 338 Lapua.....
