Dracomeister
+1 on the Magpul mags, I have several and have never had a failure to feed from anything (from 130 gn soft points to 180 gn Ballistic Tips). I also have a bunch of DPMS factory 10 and 19 round mags (the 19s are called 20 round but good luck getting the last round in!). Haven't had any real issues from any of them either but IMHO stick with the Magpul and you won't go wrong.
392heminut
I've got 3 of the DPMS steel mags. I've always seen them listed as 19 round mags but I can easily get 20 in all 3 of mine. I have 14 Magpul mags and use them most of the time and have never had a problem with any of them.

Can't speak to other mag/rifle combos.
98Z5V
I've shot 150gr softpoints through mine, and they function just fine. Feeding a softpoint shouldn't be an issue for you. It shouldn't hang up.
shibiwan
+13 on the magpul mags. The DPMS and Pro Mag ones are junk. I had a bunch of soft points (Hornady American Whitetail) and the metal mags gouged a deep groove along the soft tip as the bolt carrier stripped the rounds off the mags. The Magpul 20LR ones work flawlessly. The Pro Mag ones also needed to be modified to work properly (the last round never fed correctly with them) TL:DR - MAGPUL 20LR/SR!! ...the other alternative will be the new Lancer L7AWM mags... still waiting for them to turn up. survivalshop
I personally stay away from exposed lead bullets in auto fed actions , mainly because I have seen lead shaved off the nose of the bullets that can cause failures . I have seen lead shavings on locking lugs & in the chamber . I had to ream lead build up from a 308 chamber , where it had kept the cartridge from seating ,causing a head spacing problem . Just make sure to keep the chamber & barrel extension areas clean . PMags , of course.
greenmist
+20 on the Magpul There's a decent supply of surplus 7.62 out there running about .70 cents per round before shipping. Which rifling does your LR have? I don't think the LR is real picky about ammo, accuracy-wise. Someone who owns one might know better. As a rule with my .308s I try to keep the ammo above 150gr rounds. Generally in the 168gr-175 region, but these are not DPMSs.

shepp
You don't wanna use FMJ for hunting deer or anything like that, pretty sure here in wi it's illegal to hunt deer with FMJ. Edited April 29, 2014 by shepp
shibiwan
Barnes Vor-TX? It has good expansion while not containing lead. Available in 150 and 168gr for the 308. If you're loading your own, there's the 125gr Barnes TTSX and load it with a light charge to reduce the energy even more. The bullets themselves are pretty pricey though. Just a thought... I think the low mass projectile and expansion would stop it from overpenetrating. BTW, the 125gr projectile is the same one used for their 300BLK Vor-TX factory rounds. survivalshop
Yes, any of the ballistic tipped bullets work fine for hunting, Barnes , Hornady, Nosler & most other ammo manufacturers ,all have bullets with the plastic ballistic tips on them for hunting . If you load your own , there are many different bullet weights available .
brick13
thank you to all. i didn't get to sight it yet but that's coming shortly. i will post some targets as soon as i get it adjusted to hit one!! i got my three magpul mags in and they are A-1 quailty....fit and lock perfectly!! i just picked up some Win +P 38's for my wifes LCR today. tomorrow i'll get another couple of boxes of 308 and one more 38. <thumbsup>
Masgtions99
My custom build would not function correctly with the new GenIII magpul 20 rounders, however the steel DPMS and the ASC worked flawlessly even with the 180 soft points. The advantage to the steel mags for me is you can alter the mag lips (feed angle) just a bit and the soft tip hunting ammo doesnt get damaged on the way in the chamber!
