sbrenn01
Hi All, Just picked up an AR-10 from DPMS, it's the "Oracle" version: flat top, forward assist, dust cover. Picatinny rail on the receiver and just forward of handguard (http://www.dpmsinc.com/308-ORACLE_ep_99-1.html)%C2'> I'd like to have the option of both long range and short range sighting. I've got a Leupold VX-II 3-9x 40mm that I think would be good for long range shooting (200-500 yards). Who makes a good mount for this flat top that returns reliably to zero, and maybe raises up the scope a bit from that flat top rail? Then comes the subject of a short range sight, probably a red dot, maybe a Meprolight? Not sure about the Meprolight, comments welcome! Finally, is there a good mount for a dot or short range sight that returns to zero? And and all comments appreciated!!!
blue109
are you looking to swap between optics or to mount the dot sight offset and run them both?
Rsquared
If your planning on swapping optics.....Bobro, ADM and Larue are some good names for scope mounts. Eotech 553 (SOCOM version) is a quality HWS. It has the integral QD mounts. They return to zero every time. I use these on a couple different rifles. Oh....welcome aboard. shibiwan
You can always piggyback a micro RDS like a Burris Fastfire III or similar on the Leupold. The Leupold QRW rings are nice and are available in various heights.
Dracomeister
sbrenn, welcome aboard, you'll love the site. I have the DPMS LR-308 Oracle (don't call it an AR-10, someone might send the Viking Kitty to pounce on you!) and love it. First off, 200 - 500 yards is not really "long range" with this rifle, properly broken in, 800 is not out of the question even with the stock 16" barrel. I have learned that my rifle is WAY more accurate than me (my brother is a long-range rifleman and can make it do things I only dream about)! I'm running a Nikon 4x12x50 BDC and it works for everything from 100 yards out, not sure I'd want to shoot anything closer than that. Your 3x9 should be all you need to make it talk. At any rate, enjoy the gun and the site! <thumbsup>

GunBugBit
Hi, I'm newer than you to this forum but also own a DPMS Oracle LR-308. I've done a few things to it and will do a few more things, it's been my project rifle and entry-level into 308 ARs, kind of how my Springfield Mil Spec 1911 was my project/entry 1911. Most of the things I think about the rifle are "general AR" items, not really particular to the 308 cartridge. I don't like GI AR triggers, prefer Geissele. I like the Magpul MOE pistol grip. I like the Magpul MS3 sling. I think castle nuts should be staked. I prefer pinned gas/front-sight blocks. I think bolt carrier groups need to be of good quality. As for optics, gosh, the choices are endless. I have an Aimpoint H1 on a Daniel Defense mount for my red dot (Larue quick-detach mounts are probably the most popular choice for the red dots), and a Nikon Prostaff 3-9x40 for longer range (will be upgrading to a better magnified optic) on a cantilevered mount (forget the brand name). For a rear iron sight, I use a Troy but find Magpul polymer and steel rear sights good (have a polymer on my Colt 5.56, works great). Anyway I think this DPMS model is a good starter 308 after having owned one for 2 years. I recently ordered a barrel with a pinned FSB and will swap that in as soon as it shows up at my door. Do not shoot Tula steel-cased 308 ammo (I'll discuss this more elsewhere on the forum site)! Stick with something like PMC Bronze (brass cased, good price, good track record).
