  1. I lost my sense of adventure when a rifle I was test firing for a customer blew up. i mean, bbl split from reciever to halfway up the bbl, reciever split like a pistacio. stockl blown to pieces. It was a WWII 98 mauser, marked BYF, (mauser factory code) late war mfg. Headspace perfectly, and a .323 bore. Used factory Win 8mm mauser ammo. Respectfuly Terry
  2. Nice rifle! Test firing, without taking a chamber cast, and slugging the bbl is BEGGING for a problem! At the very least, take a led slug(oversize) and run it down the bbl and measure it. If it measures .284 plus or minus a couple of thou. it almost certanly a 7 x57. 99.999 % probabilty. Also tie the rifle to your spare tire, and use a LONG string to pull the trigger, the first time. Respectfully Terry
  3. Chambers are REAMED with a specific reamer not drilled! 7.62 is just slightly different than the 308. Respectfully Terry
  4. Just use the DPMS bolt and carrier. I'v got a RRA that was complete RRA, except the bbl. Checked the headspace and was good to go! Its got @300 rounds through it, no problems! No matter WHAT the mfg say, except for the carrier and bolt catch, parts are interchangable. I know, I' done it. No matter what brand, ALWAYS check headspace! Repectfully Terry
  5. LOL!! Thats what makes for a good horse race! Respectfully Terry
  6. Sorry, My wife and I must be the odd men out. Neither of us care for the 10mm. Wife tried it for a while. the recoil bother her MORE than her kimber ultra carry .45. Respectfully Terry
  7. Neat!
  8. Almost s nice as my wifes 300 black out pistol!
  9. Really nice!
  10. Welcome from Colorado! Terry
  11. Sorry for your loss. Respectfully Terry
  12. Were they set up first, or were you? Respectfully Terry
  13. I used to do demos for firefighters on "exploding" ammo. rigged a hot plate under a cardboard box, with a plexiglas box over that. The ctgs WOULD "explode", but the sharpnel would never pierce the cardboard box. I WOULD have made a nasty wound on skin, though! Respectfully Terry
  14. Just sell it to someone who NEEDS" it, and by the correct jig! LOL!!!! Respectfll Terry
  15. Welcome! Interesting idea! Purpose? pigs at night in the brush? Respectfully Terry
  16. You don't need to be a gunsmith to put together an AR. BUT, you do need a lot of tools.Torque wrench, headspace gauges, forarm nut wrench, pin punches, roll pin starter punches, roll pin punches, etc. Unless your going to put several together, it may be cheaper to buy one assembled. I' put them together with pressure from 30-50#. Just what I needed to get the holes to line up. Never noticed an accuracy difference. Respectfully Terry
  17. 98 has it. 30=80FT #. And yes, I'v done all my own work. Been a profesional smith for 48 years, but just learning AR's. So, perhaps I don't take All the warnings as seariously as some. Check, measure, check again. try things out. i HAVE found a number of AR bbls with the chambers out of spec. DPMS seem to use chambering reamers that are to small in the body diameter. People say "shoot them in" when actually the chambers need to be reamed to "std" diameters so pressure dosent go up. Shooting a tight chamber won't help, oh you can do it. But pressres WILL be higher than they should be. That causes un-due wear to other parts. And, eventually leads to premature parts failure, and other problems. At one gun show, I found a vender with 100 new bbls. All had "fluted" chambers, which caused the brass to come out, after firing with 6 "flutes" ( flat sides) on the brass. That comes from reamer chatter. Guy wasen't happy, but I reminded him it was better to find out now, then after he sold them, and they trashed his rep. I think some of these "new" companys need to hire a "real" gunsmith to check thing out, befor shipping out sub=standard parts, but thats just me, Sorry, off my sopbox, now. Respectfully Terry
  18. OK,,,,,,,,,,, Parts interchangeability. I have an LAR8, its fitted with a DPMS bbl in .260 rem. Shoots under 3/4' all day. Only parts I'v found that ARE NOT interchangable are the bolt carrier and the mag lock parts and the front handguards. I'v had several different bbls on the upper. 308, 260, and 338 federal being the most used. Wife and I have both RRA and DPMS style guns in the safe. My favorite is the RRA 260. Respectfully Terry
  19. The Missionary ridge fire here in Durango burned 72,000 acres! Started by sparks from a trailer. Respectfully Terry
  20. Who is the most famous person you've ever met? I once got to shoot a round of trap with Roy Rogers. Respectfully Terry
  21. Well said, Robo! Takes this group a while to grow on you. Kinda like moss........... Respectfully Terry
  22. I asked this question of a friend who hunts all over the world. Rite now he's in Africa. He said it dosen't really matter. anything in the 400-500 $ range was good. When a new chip comes out, all the Co's have it withen 6 months. Put a Leaupold up aginst a swarsofkie(? spelling) they were withen 5 feet of eact other, out to @800 yards, as far as we could sight , at that time. Respectfully Terry
  23. Just 59. Only the good die young! Respectfully Terry
  24. If its got Brownells name on , its good! Been dealing with them for almost 50 years, and thier customer service is second to NONE! Policy used to be, and i think still is, if they recieve TWO complaints on a product, its removed from their catalogue. Respectfully Terry
  25. Sounds , to me, as a gunsmith that the chamber is out of spec. One way to tell is to make a chamber cast, and mike everything. I'd bet the chamber is to small in dia, and possibly the headspace is off. When headspacing ANY weapon, the operator should remove the extractor and ejectors. Both can effect the headspaceing. Respectfully Terry
