thenewguy308
Hello! This is my first post here so take it easy on me. So I just started my AR10 build! I have ordered a complete lower assembly from Palmetto State available here for reference http://palmettostatearmory.com/index.php/ar-10/lowers/psa-pa10-308-complete-classic-lower-receiver.html What uppers will fit this lower? Will a DPMS model fit? Thanks for the help, anything is appreciated. Edited February 9, 2015 by thenewguy308
shepp
Welcome, from wi I want to say the psa is "DPMS" pattern but I maybe totally wrong You have two major patters armilite (ar10) and "DPMS" then a few others like rock river arms who are proprietary. I'm sure there will be others along with better info Edited February 9, 2015 by shepp
FaRKle!
The PA/PTAC 10 line has had some inconsistencies with general LR-308 parts. Until they build up a history without these issues nobody can say for sure. Your best bet is to probably get a PSA/PTAC 10 stripped upper, and then build on it. thenewguy308
Looks like they're out of stock on their uppers right now. I'd like to go with either a 20" or 24" barrel upper... Would it be more cost effective to build my own upper? They have the stripped upper in stock but I'm not sure what all I need in addition to that. I would like to keep it under $600 since that's about what they're selling complete ones for. This is my first AR build so I'm still learning all the stuff that makes them tick. thenewguy308
When you say they're not that accurate, what are we talking here? Can it manage sub MOA groups at 100yds? I don't need a super precision rifle, but I'd like to be able to make a clean accurate kill on a whitetail at 300+yds. The longest I ever really shoot is 500yds. So here's my list of must haves for my upper: 20" or 24" Bull barrel (fluted preferably) Free floating hand guard Mounting point for a bipod That's about it. If you were to pick the parts, what would you go with? I really like the look of the PSA upper assembly honestly. I'm a college student so budget is definitely a constraint, so if their upper can meet my needs for the best cost I'm going to go with that. Thanks for the input guys, I appreciate it! survivalshop
A 16" barrel will shoot the 308 to 500 yards with out a problem & would be a big weight difference , in a hunting rifle . <dontknow>

I never said they weren't accurate, but that they didn't have an established record of being accurate. Nobody ever says "PSA" when people ask what's a really accurate barrel anywhere. That said, considering how they spec some things out on their 5.56 barrels (such as a slightly larger gas port), leads me to believe their tolerances aren't the tightest. I wouldn't be surprised if their barrel produced 1MOA, but I also wouldn't be surprised if it did 2.5MOA. I wouldn't expect sub 1MOA though. If I were to pick parts I wouldn't pick a bull barrel (too damn heavy!), If I wanted higher velocity and was budget conscious I'd pick the Faxon Firearms 20" barrel. Faxon's 5.56 barrels perform very well (Robar uses their 4150CMV nitrided barrels in their AR-15s and guarantees 1MOA or better with them) and I'd expect their .308 barrels to do the same. thenewguy308
I was unaware that the 16" could handle 500yds accurately. They have an 18" model with a handguard I really like available here http://palmettostatearmory.com/index.php/ar-10/ar-10-upper-assemblies/psa-pa10-18-stainless-steel-308-ss15-upper-1-10-w-bcg-and-charging-handle.html Ordered my scope today, and the mount. Next Friday I get my bonus so I'll be ordering the upper. That means only a week until it's fully ordered! I guess that only leaves me with one question for you guys, how do I assemble it? I've taken apart and cleaned pistols and bolt action rifles for years but that's about it. With a complete upper and a complete lower I'm assuming it can't be too hard. The shop here said they would do it for $20, but I'm pretty good with my hands and would assume I could handle it with proper instructions. Thanks for all your help! Can't wait to post a followup picture once it's all together :sniper: Edited February 13, 2015 by thenewguy308
FaRKle!
I was unaware that the 16" could handle 500yds accurately. You can do 800yds with 16". I guess that only leaves me with one question for you guys, how do I assemble it?Super easy. Push out the front pivot pin on the lower receiver (in front of the magwell) till it stops (it's captured). Then do the same for the rear take down pin in the rear (above the pistol grip). Place the front pivot pin hole on the upper receiver between the ears of the lower receiver and align it so the holes align. Then push the pin on the lower receiver through. Close the upper receiver on the lower and push the pin through in the rear.$20 is highway robbery for something that takes 15sec... Edited February 13, 2015 by FaRKle! I've found a few that say they will only fit low profile uppers, and some that only fit non-low profile uppers. Which one is the one I ordered? unforgiven
Get a cutoff wheel, cut off the sight and grind the edges and create you'r own lo-pro gas block.I did it on a 5.56 upper with a MagPul handguard to put on a free float type. Then I used a black marker to touch up the ends. thenewguy308
Got the handguard all figured out and ordered, everything should be here by next Wednesday! I've been looking into muzzle breaks and/or recoil pads, since the hard plastic stock doesn't look like it would be fun behind a 308Win. What option would you guys advise? I'm not a small guy (6'2 185lbs) so recoil doesn't bother me too much, but I wouldn't mind a little less kick.

Don't get too far ahead of yourself, by virtue of being semi-automatic, the recoil on this platform is almost negligible anyhow. Brakes serve to reduce muzzle rise more than felt recoil, although you may well see some difference there too.
edgecrusher
I think you mean comps negate muzzle rise Matt. Brakes do take the edge off recoil, as will a heavy buffer

thenewguy308
You make a good point with it being semi auto. I've shot a lot of guns in a lot of different calibers, but never a semi auto 308. I have a Springfield featherweight 308 Bolt action and it kicks like nobodies business. With a heavier rifle and a semi auto action, I'm now thinking it might not be so bad. I went with a cheap rubber snap on recoil pad for my tactical stock just in case, plus it adds a nice little curve to the end. I'll wait and see how the kick is before investing in a brake. I wish the mail came faster so I could post my first range report already!
