Auto Trans Fluid

I'm not arguing for or against it with this, this is just a direct quote from Wikipedia:

Modern ATF typically contains a wide variety of chemical compounds intended to provide the required properties of a particular ATF specification. Most ATFs contain some combination of additives that improve lubricating qualities,[2][3][4] such as anti-wear additives, rust and corrosion inhibitors, detergents, dispersants and surfactants (which protect and clean metal surfaces); kinematic viscosity and viscosity index improvers and modifiers, seal swell additives and agents (which extend the rotational speed range and temperature range of the additives' application); anti-foam additives and anti-oxidation compounds to inhibit oxidation and "boil-off"[5] (which extends the life of the additives' application); cold-flow improvers, high-temperature thickeners, gasket conditioners, pour point depressant and petroleum dye. All ATFs contain friction modifiers, except for those ATFs specified for some Ford transmissions and the John Deere J-21A specification;[6] the Ford ESP (or ESW) - M2C-33 F specification Type F ATF (Ford-O-Matic) and Ford ESP (or ESW) - M2C-33 G specification Type G ATF (1980s Ford Europe and Japan)[7] specifically excludes the addition of friction modifiers.[8] According to the same leading oil distributor, the M2C-33 G specification requires fluids which provide improved shear resistance and oxidation protection, better low-temperature fluidity, better EP (extreme pressure) properties and additional seal tests over and above M2C-33 F quality fluids.

There are many specifications for ATF, such as the DEXRON and MERCON series, and the vehicle manufacturer will identify the ATF specification appropriate for each vehicle. The vehicle's owner's manual will typically list the ATF specification(s) that are recommended by the manufacturer.

Automatic transmission fluids have many performance-enhancing chemicals added to the fluid to meet the demands of each transmission. Some ATF specifications are open to competing brands, such as the common DEXRON specification, where different manufacturers use different chemicals to meet the same performance specification. These products are sold under license from the OEM responsible for establishing the specification. Some vehicle manufacturers will require "genuine" or Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) ATF. Most ATF formulations are open 3rd party licensing, and certification by the automobile manufacturer.

Current OEM formulations are made from synthetic base stocks. Each manufacturer has specific ATF requirements. Incorrect transmission fluid may result in transmission malfunction or severe damage.

My buddy is always using the next best lube. Constantly telling me My Mobil1 and remoil aren't doing the best job, and yet my guns all still go bang over and over. I spend about $6 for a spray can of remoil that lasts me a loooong time. Little more for a qt of oil that lasts even longer. One on the work bench, one in the range bag. Easy.

By that very statement you just made, your "friction improvers" would have in increase friction in order to "make the clutches and bands grab better."

If they decrease friction, the clutches and bands would slip.

I'll double-down on this part of the discussion - let's go. Let's get machanical here.  Spin your side of this.

98Z  back when I was racing blown gas boats...my engine builder would wipe the bore down lightly with atf before putting the piston in

Yep your right...friction improver with lube..... leakdown tests were always great... but who gave a crap...change the blower pully

gimme more boost!....then change the motor... Ha   :) Wash

You're a horsepower addict, and there is no hope for you, Wash.  I love it.  <lmao>

You dabble in nitrous yet?...

I was the first guy in Texas to use nitrous on a 482 chevy lake boat...Phuck...when I pushed that button...yes only a button in 1978 that thing jumped out of the water and then ran like a scalded cat....gained an extra 1000 rpms

So now ive got a 150 fogger with window switch, tank heater and nitrous puter in the Zo6 402 stroker . Only used it bout three times.

Once on the chassis dyno...got almost 700hp to the tires...once on the strip  145/ 9 something and once on the tollway where I spunout at night from a 60 punch and did a 360....all done...never used it again.

but back to 1978...needed to fill the tank on the boat...called my dentist buddy and he told me who to call...so they come out pick up the tank fill it and bring it back...logistics were bad...took too long...so the gas service guy told me just to order a blue tank,so I did...got the adaptors

and wholly crap this big ol truck pull up and unloads a big welding size tank...we put it in the living room of my patio home...well you know where im going with this, cause its medical grade...no sulfur added back in the day....we did have some parties going on!

crap ...we would just open the tank and ler rip in the living room...its a wonder im still alive! couldnt pull a vaccum to refill the small tank the correct way.. but who cared when you got big momma in the living room  <lmao>   Wash

Yes...Im queer for horsepower !

Damn, Wash, what class did you run that let you spray? I'm surprised that thing didn't flip a couple times on ya. I LOVE jet boat racing. The worst thing they could've done was getting rid of Speed, I was heartbroken when I lost OTE....

Chase  I had nitrous 482 in a lake boat...then a 482 Race Aero twin turbo lake boat...it had a 1320 Doug Dye carb on it..it was intercooled and put out 35 lbs of boost thereabouts...crazy Doug came to Dallas to put it on my engine...he wouldnt sell it to me without him bringing it...scared the crap outta him with that boat it was a Youngblood tunnel that I money raced with before I started racing in the SDBA...then I ran blown gas in an Eliminator picklefork  jet.. won the highpoint championship two years in a row in the early 80's. We were limited to 503 ci....had three motors...one was a Yenko block Chevy with  Arias hemi 3 pushrod heads...took it out to Cali twice ......then the day we won the second championship I stopped racing...cold turkey...traded all my crap for a cabin cruiser!.... this was back when I was single...met my first wife...she was a dragboat groupie...that deal lasted a year....lol...took longer to get rid of her than the marriage   Ha

...Damn im glad there wasnt cell phones and social media back then...the stories.. I used to pit alongside of Rick Hendricks when he came to Texas....drag boats is where he started waaay back before he got into NASCAR... btw there wasnt capsules back then...you sat in the bucket with a firesuit ,ballistic underware, and a parachute strapped on your back .  :)  Wash

Im in...at least you cant drown!   how far is the ER from the dunes?   <lmao>  Wash

Chase  Yep...it was fun days back then. My buddy had a full machine shop for engine building..dyno ..the whole works. We spent days and nites working on the engines and boat. all the good stuff came from Cali...I remember when the twin turbo kit came in from the freight company...all these boxes crated up...so we unpacked the stuff cause the long block was ready...got to the last box looking for instructions...there wasnt any...so called up the guy and told him we got no instructions...he told me there arnt any, and that we will figure it out !

I had 3 habits back then  engines/boats...gambling...which paid for the boats...and women...which took all my $hit away   :) Wash

But that gun is not going at 6000 rpm, give or take a K.  Of the people that build electric motors for model airplanes, about half recommend ATF.   Those puppies take some abuse.  I don't really think there is much in this world that gets the opportunity to wear like my Brides Fiat automatic tranny.  It uses MOPAR AW1.  I use it for a lot of stuff.  Guns being one.  No failures yet which to me is the bottom line.
