Ryannewar Posted February 25, 2016 Report Posted February 25, 2016 I'm brand new to the site and also new to the ar. I want to build a long range ie 1000 yards! I'm on the fence on many things hoping for help. First caliber I'm thinking 6.5 creedmoor? Second barrel length I'm thinking 22" at least . I'm concerned about the 6.5 I have read there are cycle issues ? I'm very open to suggestions. Also where to maybe find the cad specs as I bought the 80% lower
Malig8r Posted February 25, 2016 Report Posted February 25, 2016 Welcome to the forum from Michigan. I don't have any experience with the 6.5 Creedmoor but others will chime in with their expertise.
shepp Posted February 25, 2016 Report Posted February 25, 2016 Welcome from southern wi. Good friend of mine shoots 6.5 creed moor long range, but he shooting a bolt gun.
StainTrain Posted February 25, 2016 Report Posted February 25, 2016 What size targets will you be shooting at 1000? Do you reload?
Robocop1051 Posted February 25, 2016 Report Posted February 25, 2016 If you're building a dedicated 1k yard rifle, why stop at 22"? A 26" bull barrel will give you every bit of accuracy from that Ittybitty 6.5.The rifle will only be as reliable as the builder. The cartridge doesn't make it unreliable.
survivalshop Posted February 25, 2016 Report Posted February 25, 2016 80 % Lower , for a dedicated long range Rife , I would not skimp on Components , not saying it can't be done or your cheap , but I would have went with a Billet matched Receiver set . The only thing I have heard of the 6.5 is some have to alter the feed ramps to get that odd stepped bottle necked cartridge to feed reliably
unforgiven Posted February 25, 2016 Report Posted February 25, 2016 Welcome from Indiana brother Ryan.
Ryannewar Posted February 26, 2016 Author Report Posted February 26, 2016 Question about the 80% lower why will it effect accuracy it will be done on a cnc machine it was half again more than a complete lower just like the idea of no serial number. I'm not opposed to a 26" barrel either. I'm more leaning towards the standard 308 also will be much easier to find ammunition! Any suggestions on where to buy the best upper ?

washguy Posted February 28, 2016 Report Posted February 28, 2016 So after this 1000 yd rifle is assembled ....there's one piece of the puzzle yet to be mentioned...and that be the optics...."if ya cant see it...ya cant kill it"so I think we should keep Ryan's budget under two thousand for the scope and mount....what do yall think? Wash

WashBudget <$999.99I have very nice scope which was just under $800 on top of my 1000M rifle. And I am the cheapest MF'ER on this forum. Remember Jon's line ... $2600 rifle with $75 SCOPE !

Ryannewar Posted February 28, 2016 Author Report Posted February 28, 2016 Probably going to do a vortex scope for the first round somewhere around 6-24x50 . 22 or 24 inch barrel and a giessel trigger . Just going to go with the 308 should be more than capable with a good shooter? Thoughts ?
Dane Armory Posted February 28, 2016 Report Posted February 28, 2016 Make sure you get high rings or a ring mount that gives you clearance.
Frankh252 Posted March 1, 2016 Report Posted March 1, 2016 If I needed to reach 1000yds accurately, I'd lay down the 308 and shoulder my Browning X-Bolt 338 Mag. Not sayin' the 308 won't do it, the 338 just does it better.
