Sisco
Normally I don't worry too much around wildlife, as far as our dogs, except for wolves and coyotes. But yesterday I was inside and heard my wife screaming, so I grabbed the nearest firearm, which was a Ruger 22 target pistol, and went out the door. A muskrat, of all things had attacked one of our dogs, and had chased my wife indoors. First thing I thought with that 22 was: " thank God its not a bear." Well the thing hissed at me and stood its ground, and that was the end of that. Checked it over with rubber gloves on for signs of stress or rabies or distemper and called the vet. She checked vaccination logs for the dogs and recommended against having it tested for rabies, as they were all up to date, and it would cost me $400. The dog was ok except for one bite wound that fortunately was pretty open and not a puncture wound. We cleaned it out and have to watch her for infection. Makes me think I am going to have to exercise extra care and vigilance from now on. Guess you never know, though come to think of it, back in my duck hunting days, all the muskrats I ran into were bad tempered.
planeflyer21
Dang Sisco! Glad the pooch is okay. You may have to follow Magwa's lead and get a PMR-30 .22 Magnum.

Sisco
That target 22 has the extra long tapered bull barrel. Took care of the matter nicely. At first I thought mink, because I saw a bunch of mink tracks around the house last week. Plus we have fisher, coyote and bobcat. Around here you never know what your gonna run into. 82HALO
Yeah they are testy little f'ers!! As boys we used to trap them all the time and sell the pelts. Love my model 41 S&W target pistol!
DNP
Target 22 pistol is on the short list. It's right behind a 1911 though. This should be my last difficult tax year for a few....so good days are around the bend and hopefully I can cross those of the list before next year. No muskrats to deal with here....stray cats are starting to be an issue though.
Gator Monroe
My 1954 Ruger Standard (Mk1) is a tack driver and flawlessly reliable ,but myWW2 "War Trophy" bringback "Mixmaster" (Colt Slide/Ithaca Frame) USGI 1911A1 was my favorite CCW piece in my Rotation for 2 years until I retired it to the Safe and went with my Glock 19 (Gen 3) full time. Sisco
Ten years ago, we had a raccoon that came up on our deck and wouldn't leave. It was acting sickly, so that one I called the game warden on. Tests showed that it had distemper.
shepp
I've got a world class coon cat, when I get a coon on the deck she lets me know. She's got two under her belt. amazing how quiet the 22 shoots when you do it off the kitchen table, a crack and a ting ting ting as the case bounces across the tile floor
MikedaddyH
I had a cat that got a raccoon way way back in the day. Had to take the cat to the vet for stitches the next morning. Was a battle ! Waldo was a 27 lb country cat. Worked on a really cool critter gun yesterday , .17PMC chambered 10/22. Lance sleeved the barreled. The would be a hell of a project ! That bullet is so bad a$$.

She's an inside cat but I can always tell something up cuz she'll run from room to room window to window for the best vantage point and she squawks while she does it
