Extraction problems

Recommended Posts

I took my AR10T carbine out the last couple of days, and ran into a problem. Yesterday, I had a Failure to extract for the first time, then the rifle didn't go into battery. I got the cartridge out, which was a reload, and thought it may have been an improperly sized case. So today I took it out with some NATO Standard M80 ammo. The first four rounds were fine, then I had another failure to extract with factory ammo. I got the empty case out and went hunting for the other empty brass. Of the five cases, the one that failed to extract and one other had part of the rim with metal torn away, like the extractor had grabbed hold then came off the rim, taking some brass with it. My LGS guy is thinking the chamber is a little smaller than spec, causing the cases to stick, although I was able to push them out with a cleaning rod, and even though this has never happened before in the three years I have owned and shot the rifle. Before messing with that, we figured replacing the extractor would be worth a try. When I broke the BCG down, I found the rubber washer on the extractor spring was broken, and there was a substance like red loctite in the center of the spring that was preventing it from compressing. Do you guys think that may be the problem? I won't get a chance to go out shooting for a few days, so I won't know for sure for a while. If it still does it, we are going to carefully polish the chamber. Being a "T" it should be a snug chamber, just don't know if that is the issue or not.

Could the red loctite looking stuff be a melted red buna plug? I can't remember what I used, some sort of bore cleaner, but it turned the plug to mush and degraded the O ring. Since your rifle has had no issues for the first three years I'd swap the spring, plug, and O ring and see if that helps. Warning, it is a real pain getting this all lined up and installed so bring your patience!

That's not possible , its an Armalite !  :laffs:, just kidding .

The red stuff in the middle to he spring could also be a buffer material , you see some Blue stuff in some AR 15 Springs . ( I see JT was a faster typer  ) I know some use the o-ring in there Extractors & if it works or is meant by the manufacturer , replace all as said & I would also replace the Extractor , they are wear items & you can expect to replace them at some point , some sooner , some later .

Did not replace the extractor, but I have an extra one if I need to.

Went back in, replaced extractor, spring and O-ring. Had to use the old spring spacer as there wasn't one in the spare parts kit. We will see if it works.

Let me know if you need any parts Sisco. I've got a bunch of the re-build kits sitting around.

Thanks Brother, being an Armalite, probably will be good to go for another few thousand rounds, but I will message you if I need some.

Like driving a British car. You gotta keep a trunk full of spare parts and a mechanic in the back seat.  I'm glad to see R2 has spares on hand.

First problem I have ever had with either of my Armalites. Have probably 2,000 rounds through the two of them.

They are both made with "Al-lu-mini-hum" (say it like Jeremy Clarkson). And there hayday was in the past ! And other companies make their designs better ! Also new ownership has had quality issues ! Yep just like a British Car !!! ?

You know we're just poking R2 in the eye, right?  Everyone here wil agree that Armalite makes....OK stuff. They're no CMMG, but if they try really hard they could be.

I know, but if R2 is the Armalite Man, Then I at least got his back. Love my AR10's!
