Hurricane Harvey

I'm about 90 miles northwest of Houston.  We have seen wind and over 25 inches of rain here since this thing started.  Houston proper has seen devastating floods.  Major highways are functioning as rivers.

Watching the news this morning, one of our convention centers has been opened to refugees.  2500+ citizens are occupying the facility and the count continues to rise.  While I applaud the efforts to help those in need, any firearms brought to the facility are being confiscated by the police even if the owner has a concealed carry permit.  I've not heard any other reports of this behavior elsewhere, but I suspect this is the general order of things.  In a situation like this, firearms are just one of the valuables that I would naturally want to secure in an evacuation.

It seems to me that this is an egregious violation of our civil rights in a time when they are needed the most.  This type of systemic confiscation is deplorable and inexcusable.  If you want food, clothing, or shelter, give us your property.

Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers for those of us in the path of the storm.

Thoughts and prayers are with all of you in Texas. The firearms issue is a tough one. There should be a system for reclaiming them after the emergency. If I was an LEO I honestly don't know how I would feel. 99% of the owners are fine, but that 1% would worry me.

We are getting crews ready to head east tomorrow and Wednesday.  I don't think there are many who realize just how bad this has been in terms of flooding.  The clean up and basic restoration (signs, signals, debris removal) will take much longer than most realize.

We are almost in the center of Texas, 120 miles SW of DFW and we have only had about 1.5 " of rain.  It has been cloudy and in the upper 70s, this morning sunny. The outer ring of the storm is 120 miles SE of us down around Fort Hood. Many of our power workers are helping out.

I live South of Houston, and work as a corrections officer in a facility in Texas City. Harvey has been kicking our azz down here. At my house we've experienced severe flooding. I've had over a foot of water in my downstairs. We've got food and water, and we have dry living quarters up stairs. So, we are good. However, many folks are not. My mom lives in a neighborhood south of Lake Conroe. They are currently releasing huge amounts of water from the Conroe dam, and it's flooded my moms place. They've been through this before, and they took their camper and vehicles to a KOA north of lake Conroe. They are safe, but have lost everything at their home. A neighbor sent them pics.

Some pics my buddy sent of his place. He lives a couple miles from me.

He and his family are staying on the second floor of his home. He's sheltered in place.

In my little town of Santa Fe we haven't seen any gouging. There's limited supplies. No bread. No milk. And, very little gasoline. However, we made a grocery run to the local HEB this morning and did get some good groceries. Folks are working together, and I haven't seen anyone get out of line. Neighbors helping neighbors, as it should be.
