Lonewolf McQuade Posted November 30, 2018 Report Posted November 30, 2018 Shot a decent 8 point this afternoon with my ruger ranch rifle chambered in 7.62x39, using shitty 123gr wolf steel case HP. WORKED well, he only ran about 15 yds.

I've shot ground hogs all summer with that rifle out to 400yds. I was really looking forward to taking a deer with it. I was satisfied with the results!

It only has a 16" barrel.hell of a small, manuverable, accurate little rifle. Perfect for in a blind or tree stand.

I think it's cool you used a (not necessarily conventional for Whitetail hunting) 7.62x39 rifle with a shorter barrel too.

ARTrooper Posted December 6, 2018 Report Posted December 6, 2018 I used a very similar round this year. 300 BLK with 125 gr Nosler ballistic tips. 100 yard shot and he went 40 yards. nice little 6 pointer that tastes great, I actually thought he was a fork or spike at first.

It had good weight retention, I wasn't picking lead out of the meat. and it mushroomed pretty good based on the exit wound, about the size of a quarter. I hear another good one is Hornady's full bore 110 gr hunting rounds.

Great work! yeah actually that stick in between his antlers he picked up when he went down 10 or so feet from where he started sliding.
