Happy Veterans Day

To all you folks that made it home and have big families and enjoy their lives to the best they can,  thanks.  To all my brothers and sisters that served please note I placed no qualifiers,  exceptions,  or any other minutia.  They just serve to confuse,  IMO,  please enjoy this day.  Although I miss the camaraderie,  I know what it meant and that's enough for today.  God Bless.

Thank you all for posting,  it's important and always will be.  @98Z5V I recently saw that video thank you for posting it.  That man,  were he alive today,  would report to duty if called upon.  Being one of the millions of baby boomers I have a pocketful of WWII stories from Vets.  One fellow was a friend of my dad's.  I grew up on The Lower East Side of NYC and was dragged as a child to every bar in town on a regular basis.  I always went home with silver coins and pennies the boys would give me.  A man named Snootchie toys this story.  He was a Veteran of WWI,  and one day received a message to report for duty  for WWII.  He showed up and once they were all called to fall in,  the SGT came upon him and asked 'What are you doing here ?"  Snootchie answered ,  "  I received notice."  Snootchie was 51 years old at the time.  Asked to leave he replied,  "  Why don't you send all these youngsters home and get all us old Bastards here."  Go figure.

Amen.

Our local Italian place offered a free spaghetti and meatball dinner to all Vets.  It was a big hit, nearly an hour wait time when I got there.  Most of the Vets were from Korea and Vietnam, sadly didn't see any from WWII as most have passed or well into the 90's.

My dad served in WWII, Korea and Vietnam retiring in 1972.  He would have loved the night out we had with the family, but sadly he passed in 2015 at 89.  Dad seldom spoke much of war stuff, like most Vets from that era they were tough as nails and seldom talked about any wartime experiences.   He did tell one story a few times as he started out in the Merchant Marine in WWII and as a ship he was on listed hard and on it's way down he slid off the deck and over the rail.  He said that a hand reached down and pulled him to safety, but he never said who it was?  We were certainly thankful that's for sure!.....Cliff

Amen again.  @Cliff R  My Dad served Merchant during the war as well.  Glad they both came home.  God Bless your pop.  I agree with everything you wrote.  My Dad was a bit more revealing in the wartime story era.  Malta was the horror show.  Murmansk another tough go.  D-Day,  my Dad said it was so full of ships you could almost walk to shore on them.  Of course that's a bit of poetic license,  but he was there and very silently proud of his deeds.  He loved deep sea fishing and would tell me about the Wolf Packs and how they were defenseless against them.  It was a crap shoot if you made it or not.  They were heroes for sure.
