What scope for a PCC?

Charlie

Recommended Posts

I have a Sig MPX carbine I'm fond of. It has a set of Magpul MBUS sights, but my eyes don't see open sights as well as they used to. So I would like to locate some sort of optic for it.

I already have a Vortex Sparc II, but I'm just not wild about it. I'm thinking something in the 2-4 power range with a Mil Dot reticle. I don't like red dots because they use a battery (that can go bad in a heartbeat), and I wasn't quite thinking of spending enough to get in ACOG territory (but I might 😉.

Any recommendations?

Both of my PCC's (9mm & 40 S&W) have a 1X red dot on them. My feeling is yeah, you're shooting a carbine but it's still a pistol caliber. I personally can't see any advantage to running a higher power optic on mine. I would invest in an Aimpoint Comp M4 or M4s before buying an ACOG. Aimpoint claims a battery life of up to 8 years on the AA battery used in them. I have an M4s that has had the same battery in it for over 2 years now and I don't turn it off, it's my house gun. Still going strong.

Batteries aren't a problem if you shut them off when you're not using them. How do I know this? I've ran more batteries dead from forgetfulness than I care to admit!:laffs:

I'm sure that both of those are good options for some people, but neither of them is materially different from my Vortex Sparc II, and I don't want a red dot.

My issue with red dots is that when I bring the rifle to bear and look through the optic I expect to see a crosshair reticle, and it takes an instant to adjust. And while it might be only 100 miliseconds it's still wasted time. Every optic on my other rifles has a crosshair reticle and I am not going to re-train myself to look for a stinking dot.  It ain't natural!

If we ever get out of Wuhan Flu lockdown I'm going to do some serious shopping because my "Stimulus" check is burning a hole in my pocket!

Leupold 1.5x4 fire dot. I have one on the Grendel. Mil dot reticle with the center of the cross hairs lit as a dot. Dot goes off with no movement. Pick it up and the dot comes on. The scope is also available without a dot.

That's what I was gonna recommend, I have that on my 12.5" Grendel, and it's perfect for that rifle. Light as hell, too, around 9oz. Leupold Mark AR Mod 1 Firedot G with the SPR Reticle.  Leupold killed that scope line, so you'll be looking for old stock at places that still have it.  This is it:

https://www.leupold.com/reticles/reticle-firedot-g-spr-illuminated-128

Natchez Shooters Supply states that they've got it in stock, so you better jump on this fast.  FAST.  Lesson 65b in effect - You Snooze, You Lose.

https://www.natchezss.com/leupold-mark-ar-mod-1-rifle-scope-1-5-4x20mm-illuminated-firedot-g-spr-reticle-black-matte.html

On my .45AR and the 9mm AR, I have red dots. The .45AR will still whack IPSC steel plates at 200 yards, but it's a 16" barrel.  The 9mm is an 8" barrel, and I've never taken it out that far.  Seems like I should try...

I have a 1-4 Millett with a basic Dot circle on my 16” 308. Works great for banging steel and can even hit the man sized plate at 400 most times. It needs a new home as I’d like to put something else on the AR, but I might just have to pick up a Ruger in 9 for that one.

Y'all don't laugh, but this is what I'm putting on the Sig MPX.

It's a Bushnell AR91424 1-4X22 Mil-dot. I found it on Optics Planet, and they wanted $429.98 for it, but I searched for a better price and found it for $174 on Amazon! I think it has been discontinued, but anyway, I bought it on Amazon. :-)

It arrived today and I dropped it into a set of throw rings. I'll level it and take it to the range tomorrow (if the WX cooperates).

A couple of months ago I pretty much swore that I would never buy another Bushnell optic. A Bushnell Sportview I had on a .22 dropped a locking ring in the occular. I didn't think it was under warranty (about 8 years old), but I sent it to their repair center anyway along with my check for $10.00 to cover return shipping, and I didn't hear squat from them. A little over a month later I got an email saying they were sending me a new scope, and a couple of days later there it was along with my voided check! So that worked. :-)

So far I like the scope. I have never owned an optic with such a small objective, but I'll find out tomorrow if there are any negatives.

My nephew has that scope with the BTR reticle in it. He hunts with it and keeps it on a rifle behind the seat of his farm truck, held zero for going on five years now. I own several Bushnell Tactical Elite scopes and am a big fan, Bushnell has upped their game to try and stay up with makers like Vortex, bet you'll be fine with it.

It's good to hear that. I have owned Bushnell scopes since forever. Way back in 1976 I was braining squirrels with a 3-9 power on a Remington 572 at 50+ yards! (yeah, I have always over-scoped my rifles, because why not? :-).

That's a good scope right there, brother.  I have one of them, and wish I had more.  It's one of the few that they do in mils, and I like it.

If you DON'T end up liking it - lemme know.  I'll take it, and pay you for it.

I'm glad to hear that because none of the locals had it, so it was a shot in the dark. Check on Amazon. I bought mine for $174 no shipping and no tax which was a darn sight better than OP wanted for it.

I mounted the new scope (Bushnell AR 1-4 X 24) and took it and the MPX to the range today. I put 75 rounds downrange and more or less zeroed the scope with the crappy Remington 115 gr FMJ green box ammo I've got (L9MM3). Best group at 75 yds was 2 1/2 inches vertical by 3/4 inch horizontal.

The MPX is tres cool. It's an AR pattern 9mm with a collapsible stock, but I'm beginning to wonder why I want a PCC. I don't walk the fences anymore, and even if I did I can think of a couple of other rifles I would rather have. I liked the idea of a camp carbine when the kids were young and we were actually camping, but that hasn't happened in about 100 years.

The Sig MPX replaced an Inland M1 Carbine. I used the M1 for transition training when bringing the kids (and newbies) up to speed on centerfire rifle. But I'm not doing a lot of training now, and the MPX is just sitting in the safe. I'm thinking about selling it on GB or taking it to the next gun show. The only thing I'm looking for right now is a CZ Shadow 2 (91257), and I have only ever seen one at the gun show, so that's probably not going to happen.

I like the scope, and I like the MPX. I'm just not sure that the MPX fits in my collection.

Well, that's a different turn of events, BUT...

How you feeling about that Inland M1?...   If you still have it, and it's gotta go, too, I'm here for you, brother...

It's gone. I bought it way back in the '80s, and that rifle is one of the few that actually made money for me. I bought it for about $225 and got north of $2K when I sold it. The MPX cost a pretty penny, but when all was said and done I had money to put in the bank.

I liked the M1, but I would have liked it a lot better if it had a collapsible or folding stock and an easy way to mount a scope. I mean, you can mount a scope on an M1, but the mounts are crap and they won't hold zero for squat! The same is true for the Uzi carbine. I had one of those too, and the stock is tedious to deploy and tedious to retract! And the scope mounts that are offered for the thing are a joke!

Damn.   I was looking for a companion to this one - it's an old IBM.  I did the Ultimak top rail on it and red-dotted it.  This would work well, scoped, if it was an extended eye relief scope or a pistol scope.  M1 Carbine won't need magnification, though, for what it is.  I'll keep this one forever, love it.

I have CMMG's Banshee in 10mm, I have red Dot on it and a light, it's my HD gun.  Not sure what you had in mind when you bought it , but it's something to consider.

I guess that all I had in mind was training and camping, and I'm not doing a lot of that now. 10mm sounds interesting, and Sig is (was) supposed to offer a caliber exchange kit in 10mm, but I don't see it on their website.

The Secret Service had that down to an art! I don't know if they even use Uzis anymore but back in the day they could deploy those thing quick!

No kidding! This pic from the attempted Reagan assasination (may John Hinckley Jr rest in feces!)

Note the briefcase with the Uzi shaped foam cutouts in the street.

I practiced it a bit and it can be done. I could live with the stock, but I really like a good _*STABLE*_ scope mount and a last round hold-open, but I admit that the agent in the photo needed neither of them.
