Need A Lighter Barrel

The Wizard

Recommended Posts

If you’re willing to slim up the profile, I’d shorten it up a bit too. 16 or 18 is good. These rifles are heavy. If you want something lighter, a ground up build might be better bang for the buck...literally.

how much do you want to spend and how light do you want it to be?

I was think along the lines of this: https://faxonfirearms.com/faxon-20-pencil-profile-ar10-barrel-308-win-nitrided/

But they are out of stock and I know nothing about this company. And by the way I absolutely, with every fiber of my being, detest short barrels!

I have a ArmaLite AR-10B A2 rifle that right now weights right at 10 pounds unload. I am thinking a slimmer profile 20" barrel would help a little. I have done some searching but have no idea what barrel maker makes a decent product. Suggestions?

What is your shooting goal, here?

1000 yards is your starting point?  Or is it Home Defense?  Maybe you're hunting deer, and the longest shot you'll ever take will be 185 yards?

What's your goal for this gun?  That's the most important question that needs to be answered.  Can't offer you ANY valid advice without your input on that part of the equation.

By the way - a 10lb .308AR is pretty fucking light. A loaded 20-rd mag weighs 2lbs, just on it's own.  Magnified optics in a decent mount is another 2lbs.  My experience.

Then get used to a 11 or 12 lb rifle that is the game you are playing the biggest way to get light is shorten the barrel and slim profile these guns are heavy and in truth you gain very little by having a long barrel unless you are just going to shoot it off the bench , but if you plan to hunt etc a shorter barrel will really balance the rifle and if you every want to add a suppressor you will not want that long barrel I shoot a 16 out to 700 yards very well and have taken elk to 376 yards all with 16 inch barrel .the gun in the pics below weighs just over 9 lbs with 16 inch barrel and other mods including hand gaurd.

A 14.7” pencil profile barrel will do that all day long. No matter how much you detest it. And will offer you The greatest in weight reduction. Couple that with a lighter optic, handguard and stock...you’ll have a rifle closer to 10 lbs loaded out.

Please do not post anymore replies to this thread. It is obvious that I am incapable of know what is good for me or what I want and that everyone else know what is best for me and what I should do.  I guess I will have to tread this path alone to my own destruction.

That’s no attitude to have. Crap, there I go telling you what to do again. You’re going to do what you’re going to do. You mentioned Faxon and I replied they make quality barrels. We also shared with you our own personal experiences. If you’re just looking for a list of barre manufacturers that make 20” slim profiles, you’ll be fine if you stick to any bigger names. What drove us to share the information we have is your comment about weight.  A rifle is a tool. Build it to best perform the task at hand. In your case, an 18x32 target at 500M. If you really want to save a little weight, put 2 less rounds in the mag...that’s about all you’re gonna save and it doesn’t cost you a dime. I will gladly leave you alone now as requested, but if you ask a question on the internet and don’t get the answer you want to hear, don’t get angry. Just chill out and eat a sammich.

How often do you go to someone else's house and tell them what to do? It's a forum, if you don't want responses don't post. Grow up.

Hey kid,  I read the thread and it was nothing except suggestions.  When you ever ask a question there will always be several ways to go.  Detest is a strong word especially as applied to an inanimate object.  We all paid a big price switching rifles about and these folks merely wanted to save you some heartache and cash.  Saving people cash is not the usual fare on this site but they showed pity and concern for a newbie.  Suck it up brother no harm/no foul intended.  It is never a bad suggestion to suggest adding strength to your arsenal.  You could walk about with a 10 lb dumbbell all day long,  but stretch that weight into a rifle shaped object and it becomes cumbersome especially in a firing stance.  Best of luck.

For sure, it might slip right in, and the EMS folks will never believe it was an accident. There are only two sound reasons for running a long barrel, it adds enough velocity to be worth the weight, or you must run iron sights and it gives you a longer sight radius, but a bloop tube will do that too ;-).

Not faster than the ban hammer though. I’m locking this as it’s over, for good, for the wizard. Sorry not sorry.

And to any new guys reading this post. There was good suggestions with reasoning behind those suggestions. But, his attitude is not welcome here. It would have been easy for him to say I just really like the look of a 20” barrel. But no. Alas the ban.
