R2's MK-12 build

Recommended Posts

So I go stumbling through the door of my local gun pusher. Wait...no.....wrong story. (you long time members will get that)

So I'm finally getting around to building this thing. I've been sitting on the majority of the parts for a little over a year. So I figured that today is the day to get this bitch together.

All I gotta do is make this.........

1542565688_MK12Parts.thumb.jpg.c4c86098d7b195897bada86f0f700552.jpg

...........turn into a functional rifle. Seems straight forward enough, even for a window licking, cherry flavored crayon eater like me.

So, it's been a while since I built my last rifle. I almost forgot how much of a bitch those damn trigger pins can be sometimes. Of course, the first time they damn near fell in. Then, following the typical R2 pattern of luck and stupidity model,. I forgot to put the safety selector in first. No biggie. So I Pop the pins back out and slap in the selector. Trigger pin slides in like butter. Then I proceed to fumble with the F#*@ing hammer pin for 15 minutes. Walk away, take a couple of deep soothing breaths, get a drink of water and return. Hammer pin slides in. FUKER!

So, at this point, the lower is complete. Yea!

So I go to start working on the upper. NOW. Take a good look at that first picture and tell me if you see what I'm missing. I'll wait.

(insert jeopardy music here)

OK. I'll let you in on it, since I can tell that you're on the edge of your seat? The FUKING gas tube. How do I not have a fuking gas tube in stock? You've GOT to be fukin kiddin me. Un-Fucking-believable. Can't really get too far with the upper build without the gas tube. It's kinda like an important part if you weren't aware.

So, it looks like I'll return to this later. Where's my fukin beer at?

Armalite SPR lower,   Armalite upper,   Armalite LPK

Standard A2 stock,   Hogue grip,    Toolcraft BCG,    Geissele SSA-E trigger

Ballistic advantage 18" 1 in 8 twist stainless 6.5 Grendel barrel, with NO FUKIN GAS TUBE!

PRI gen 3 handguard,    PRI top rail,    PRI flip up sight/gasblock,    PRI flip up rear sight,    PRI charging handle

Did I say no fukin gas tube?

Atlas bipod,   AAC compensator (going with this for my cans)

And still no FUKIN gas tube.

I haven't decided yet on what glass that I'm gonna put on top of this bastard yet. I've got it narrowed down to about 4 different optics. Shocker.....somehow I always seem to pick expensive $hit. Fuk me four ways from Sunday. I'll let you all stew on which four they could possibly be for a while.

That's enough for now.

As you were ladies.

I'm not seeing a PRI GasBuster in the pic anywhere.  Hell,I don't see any charging handle in there...

Yeah, I forgot to throw the charging handle on that pile, but I've got it. I appreciate the offer of a gas tube my man. BUT, the R2 theory of being stupid, had me stumble across the gas tube finally yesterday evening as I was cleaning up after putting all the tools away. It was hidden in some of the packing paper. As usual, I almost threw it away as I was breaking down the box that the barrel came in. I thought that I had ordered the gas tube with the barrel.

So, now we'll carry on.

oh damn I hate doing this! Ordering all at once is the way to go, or I put it on one shelf and forget where I put it! 🍻🍻🇺🇸

So I made some more progress. She's coming together pretty good and almost complete. I've just gotta slap the muzzle device on her in the morning. After that, I'll wait until next Saturday to take her up to my gun pusher, so he can fondle her a little too, and see what kind of glass that he may have. I've been trying to throw money at him during this build, since I haven't been up to his shop since last year when I bought that AR-31 off of him. Tried to give him the PRI sale, but he stopped being a dealer for them a while back. So, I'll give him a shot with the glass. He was pushing Sig optics (along with others) the last time I bought an optic off of him. He's not a Nightforce dealer anymore either, so he better hope that I don't decide to put an NXS scope on this thing. I was eye-ballin one on Primary Arms. Yeah , yeah, I know.....you guys are saying enough with the jaw-jacking and get to the rifle porn. So...................

Charging handle, since I didn't specify before.

On the operating table just after getting the handguard and gas system in place.

Like I said. Muzzle device in the AM and then it's on to optics.

As you were ladies.

So. Optics.

I'm gonna make a run up to my local gun pusher in the AM to see what kind of stuff he has, or may be able to get. I've got to admit, I'm already kind of leaning towards another nightforce NXS optic for this. I really like their stuff.

But, to be fair. I figured that I'd throw out some of my honorable mentions to you guys.

Going in ascending order of cost.

First up, Trijicon.

https://www.primaryarms.com/trijicon-credo-2-10x36-ffp-rifle-scope-red-moa-precision-tree-reticle-matte-black

Next up, EoTech.

https://www.eotechinc.com/eotech-vudu-2-5-10x44-ffp

And of course. The Nightforce.

https://www.nightforceusa.com/nxs-25-10x42mm-zerostop-250-moa-moar-digillum-ptl-c458.aspx

All of these are "similar" (ish) to the original spec'd scopes.

Also, I'm planning on using either a Bobro Engineering single lever QD mount, or yet another ADM QD mount.

Like I said before, my pusher isn't a Nightforce dealer anymore as of my last visit with him a year ago. But he carries some of the nice Sig optics as well as others. Though I get pretty pig-headed (yeah, shocker right?) once I get my mind set on something. So we'll see what happens. That fuker somehow always figures out a way to push my buttons.

I'll let you all know what happens after I get back from the pusher's tomorrow.

AND.....the adventure continues.

Hate do be that dickhead, but scratch that NightForce off the list - that reticle doesn't have shiit for any windholds in it.  That PA-listed Trijicon Credo does have a decent reticle for wind.  That EOTech Vudu only has a decent reticle for wind if you get the Horus H-59 reticle option - and that thing isn't lit all the way through, so it'll suck at night.

If it was me, brother, and I was the MOA-Whore, I'd do that Trijicon Credo.  That's just my $0.02, though.  That's the only one that fills the need that I have in a scope, to include shooting at night, with wind.

No worries my brother. I'm always open to thoughts and opinions. That's why this group of guys is here. We always bounce ideas off of each other.

If I was you, in your shoes, I'd buy an Athlon.  No joke.  I just put this bitch on my 12.5" 6 ARC, and it is BAD!...   2~12 magnification, FULL lit reticle, I can turn the mag up in 2x and run that thing like a red-dot, and I dialed it down low enough to smack the fuk out of the 450-plate at night, with wind.  This is the one that I got, in MILS of course:

https://athlonoptics.com/product/helos-btr-gen2-2-12x42-dmr-scope/

Ranging built in, at the bottom.  What's not to like?

Now, wait a minute, before you blow me off!!!  THEY OFFER THIS SAME THING IN MOA, FOR THE GUYS THAT DON'T LIKE MILS, OR JUST CAN'T FIGURE THEM OUT!!!!  BECAUSE ATHLON ROCKS!!!   :hail::lmao:

Here's this little hooker - 2~12 mag, 42mm objective, badass reticle in a DMR scope.  For a DMR rifle that you're building, right?...   Check it:

You can either wait 'til Fall, and shoot my 12.5" 6 ARC, and check it out for yourself - or you can trust me, and get the MOA one.  It's a bad little scope - and it's got more magnification than the ones you're listing, it's got a no-holds-barred lifetime warranty, and it's a fuk-load cheaper than the other stuff that you're listing.

Oh, and it does more.  I'm just sayin'... :soap:

Yep. I remember seeing that from your build thread. Hell, I said that it looked like a hell of a scope.

Either way, I'm trying to help out my local pusher first before I go to the internet. That's why I want to see what he's pushing. Plus I know that he'll want to fondle the new build.

I support, fully, keeping the local dealers in business - that's why I pushed GunPusher John to become an Athlon Dealer.  Push your guy the same way, brother. For real.

John sells Athlons left and right, and is constantly ordering now.  They fly out of the display cases.

I'll just drop this right here...

Quote

Athlon Lifetime Warranty

Your Athlon Optics product is not only warranted to be free of defects in materials and workmanship for the lifetime of the product. Athlon will also repair or replace, at no charge to you, your product if you should damage it through normal use. No receipt needed, no registration required. This is a commitment that Athlon will be the best product you can buy for your money.

I can back that up - they warrantied out one of my 6~24 scopes, no questions asked.  That's the only one that ever had an issue, and the parallax adjustment wasn't right, for range. New one on the way, right away.  I've never had an issue with any of the others, and I have a pile of these things now.  Because of that.

We called the Rep late at night on a Drunk Dial last year at the Fall Shoot, and he answered, during a late-as-hell night shoot.  "Tom just shot out the illum on his .260 Rem scope!"  His answer was "Just send it back and I'll warranty it out - the one on his .260 Rem is a first gen, so he'll get the new one with the stainless internals and the improved zero-stop!"

So, first - he knew exactly what scope I had on my gun. Second, zero hesitation in giving me the new one, with the improved internals.  Then third - I JUST PUT IN A NEW BATTERY, and it was still fucked...  And we called him. Send that bitch in, get the new scope, for Free-Fiddy Free.  I put in one of MY OWN new batteries - and it lit right up.

So I felt guilty about sending that scope in, just to get the new stuff.  We called him again the next day, and told him about it - over a weekend.  He still answered...  Spilled the deal that I got a bad battery, thought the scope was fucked, and it's a false alarm.  He said to send it in anyway, but I felt guilty, and told him no - it's still working.

I'll give you guys 7 guesses where I got that battery from, after the first kill on the battery...   That led to the call in the first place...
