Sisco
If you look at this exercise in isolation, it is no big deal. If you start looking at it in context of other similar exercises and in light of rapidly improving armaments from both Russia and China with far greater reach then previous generations, it is evident the U.S. military is responding by developing decentralized methods to protect our forces. But also with the expectation that in the next war, the American homeland is no longer protected by distance from even conventional weapons of our enemies, and airfields and bases in the U.S. may be attacked and put out of commission. Not to mention dams and power plants. Doodle
I've driven down M-32 many times. Have also seen the A-10s almost scrubbing the trees in the National and state forests up there many times while out hunting. There's a squadron based out of Selfridge, just north of Detroit. Here's links to some videos. https://www.mlive.com/news/2021/08/video-shows-military-thunderbolt-iis-historic-landing-on-michigan-highway-during-northern-strike.html https://www.militarytimes.com/news/your-military/2021/08/05/watch-a-10s-use-rural-michigan-highway-as-a-runway/ Also, here's a few (not so good phone) pics from the Air Show at Willow Run yesterday, a really hot and humid affair (and loud! glad I brought the earplugs). B-25 Mitchells: Willow Run's own B-17 on the runway and with P-51 escort: Air Force Thunderbirds F-16s: Even the (modern) Luftwaffe was there:
Doodle
The airshow also had A-10s doing simulated bomb runs, not posting pics as the crappy ones I have don't do it any justice.

Steve crawford
I got to see an A-10 play with a Big tank at the old air base in Austin, TX back in about 85 or 86. It was impressive how quick that A-10 could turn and be back on target. I asked the pilot if the 30mm would go through Russian tank armor. He said no. He said 2 passes with his cannon and there would be a large pile of ragged chunks of steel. I asked " you said it would not go through the armor?" He said " If you hit an anvil enough times with a hammer you will break it up into small pieces ". 😁😁😁 Steve Edited August 8, 2021 by Steve crawford
Sisco
Back in the early 80’s some body broke into the old Twin Cities Army Ammunition plant, went through three layers of security, and opened a safe, and stole a developmental round of the Gau-8. Professional work and I will bet that within a week it was sitting in a laboratory in the old Soviet Union.

More I look into it, the more amazing it seems. Here's a pic from the inter webs that provides some perspective...had no idea regarding the sheer size of that gun... DNP
Photos like that reveal how good we really have it here. That’s everyday reality for those folks. And here’s Karen bitching and throwing a fit because the coffee shop was out of an ingredient necessary to make her gluten free vegan soy strawberry hot pile of garbage in a cup. I didn’t realize we were living in such hard times. That’s my privilege showing through again I guess - I’ve just been living under a rock my whole life. EDIT - Oh shiit, one of those bitches is the Su-100... The SU 100 was a reaction to the Germans King Tiger, as the 85mm gun of the SU 85 and the T-34/85 couldn’t defeat it’s frontal armor. It also came in handy for breaching buildings during house to house battles. Edited August 10, 2021 by Sisco
