49 Posted December 14, 2011 Report Posted December 14, 2011 I posted this on SH figured it would be appropriate to post it here as well.My first attempt @ DIY camo I traced all the patterns from one section of my Tab Gear shooters mat and tried to lay out the patterns the exact same way on the rifle.I used 12 colors to try and get it right and lots of polyurethane to finish it off.Did my own design on the brake, barrel, bipod & bikini covers.Hunter GreenItalian OliveHosta LeafAvocadoAlmondKhakiSandBrownEspressoBrown BootsBallet Slipper PinkDark Taupe
Robocop1051 Posted December 14, 2011 Report Posted December 14, 2011 That looks phenominal!!!A few parts look shinier than others, but I assume that's the camera.Way to go on a job well done <thumbsup>
unforgiven Posted December 14, 2011 Report Posted December 14, 2011 Looks great <thumbsup>Shoot on bro.
98Z5V Posted December 14, 2011 Report Posted December 14, 2011 why.....Break up the all-black outline of the rifle, if you ever intend to shoot it anywhere other than a shooting range...Looks great, 49! <thumbsup>
edgecrusher Posted December 14, 2011 Report Posted December 14, 2011 Rifle ? All I see is windage and elevation marks floating in multicam. Well done
planeflyer21 Posted December 15, 2011 Report Posted December 15, 2011 First time at bat and you're hitting 1,000! Very good job!Watch out...now everyone is going to want you to paint theirs. <thumbsup>Jon
Retired JM Posted December 15, 2011 Report Posted December 15, 2011 Nicely done. Well met, sir.why.....Looks like the Signal to Noise ratio just went down a little.
Robocop1051 Posted December 15, 2011 Report Posted December 15, 2011 I keep coming back to this. The work was really done well. It assume you sprayed the parts separately, and then reassembled them when they were dry? Can I ask how long it took? Forgive my ignorance, but what did you coat it with?
soofley Posted December 15, 2011 Report Posted December 15, 2011 very cool paint job! what muzzy brake is that?
49 Posted December 15, 2011 Author Report Posted December 15, 2011 Thank you for all the complimentsI keep coming back to this. The work was really done well. It assume you sprayed the parts separately, and then reassembled them when they were dry? Can I ask how long it took? Forgive my ignorance, but what did you coat it with? For the most part I kept it assembled to make sure the pattern flowed throughout the rifle. The scope/rings were removed but I kept the scope in the rings/levelAlso kept the UBR closed I did open it and spray it only after the rest of the rifle was complete/dryI did wrap the barrel/brake in wax paper and put the FFtube back on.Before I started I already made the decision that the barrel/brake/bipod were going to be some shade or shades of green so I did those lastAfter everytime I sprayed it I would hit it with a heat gun set on its high setting beingcarefull not to keep it to close but I would make sure it got damn hot Then I would let it dry for at least 5 days and in that time I could lay out the next design in my head.......That was all that was on my mind for a month or so...A little distracting but fun as hell to do.I used MinWax Fastdrying Polyurethane (black and gold aresol can) for the final finishI used a whole can just on the FFT and a whole can on the rifle almost a hole can on thescope and rings and I used alot on the mags as well.I let all that dry for another 5 days then I assembled it.I stuffed alot of toilet paper inside to protect the barrel and upper and mag well.Whatever overspray I got in the magwell was easily removed with Acetone. The only problem was with the mag release on the left side It would catch just a bit from the buildup of the polyurethane but that was an easy fix.A couple light passes with some 200grit and it functions flawlessly.Anymore questions just ask.I learned alot from this project I have 2 more projects I plan on doing and they shouldlook even better.AL

Matt.Cross Posted December 15, 2011 Report Posted December 15, 2011 JP Rifle Bennie Cooley tactical large profile .850 odhttp://jprifles.com/1.4.3_tre.phpALThat son of a gun is a big brake but it works really well doesn't it? That's what I've got on my Frankengun build right now...
soofley Posted December 15, 2011 Report Posted December 15, 2011 looks verry intimidating, i like it. iMight get that one for mine too. does make your "bang" go "BAAAANG!"
Matt.Cross Posted December 16, 2011 Report Posted December 16, 2011 looks verry intimidating, i like it. iMight get that one for mine too. does make your "bang" go "BAAAANG!"It's pretty bad when your muzzle brake causes other people at the range to develop a flinch... <laughs> I just look at it the other way, once I can overcome flinching with that particular brake, everything else is a piece of cake! <thumbsup>
blue109 Posted December 16, 2011 Report Posted December 16, 2011 I keep coming back to this. same here. not something i want to do to mine...but man it looks good. really clean job.
IowaFClass Posted November 7, 2012 Report Posted November 7, 2012 VERY NICELY DONE!My brothers in arms that wear the uniform (multicam) tell me you can see the black rifle long before you see the troops on patrol. Wonder why the military doesn't send more time on camo for the weapons.
SDDuc996 Posted November 7, 2012 Report Posted November 7, 2012 That's why the original requirement for the SCAR was for a tan/coyote-ish exterior. On our 08' deployment, I krylon'd my issue 10" with an FDE color. It blended into a lot of environments very well.Excellent job on this pattern by the way. Looked time consuming, but you got it perfect.
tackleberry2000 Posted November 7, 2012 Report Posted November 7, 2012 Awesome paint job. One of the best I've seen.
MaDuce Posted November 10, 2012 Report Posted November 10, 2012 That's AWESOME!! A word of advice though. For at least the metal parts, Testors flat model spray paint baked at 300f for 3 hours is the best bake-on finish for metal parts I've seen before durakote. Even better then Crylon and Rustolium. I would imagine it would work exceptionally well for the furniture as well, having been designed for plastic in the first place. You can get it in a huge variety of colors too.
zmallory Posted December 16, 2014 Report Posted December 16, 2014 I realize this is an old thread, but I just did a multi-cam krylon job on my ar10 using template cutouts from Ahab Tactical.
blue109 Posted December 16, 2014 Report Posted December 16, 2014 beautiful. worthy of its own thread though.
