I helped work on a house years ago that was built with hardwood studs. all the frame was hardwood and old hardwood at that. I don't know how old the place was but it was old. we couldn't drive a nail in that stuff for nothing. 16 penny nails would bend way before they sank to the head, even if you hit them straight on.

And a guy beat those nails in all day every day. Nails were probably harder too.

This place had square nails in it if I remember right.

Probably was, they looked like the ones in the pic best I remember, we didn't remove many and they had been there for many years.
