    My last Elk

Last years Elk may well be my last, I started out this year trying to build up some momentum to get out there and get it done but I ran out of steam my heart just is not in it, I have to either find easier elk or seriously try to get back into mountain shape because frankly is is getting really hard...I think maybe when all the smoke clears from the folks I can reassess but right now it just is not there ...

    Hello!

Thank you Moon Boots ... it is a hard time for the wife and I but we realize it is just the completion of the life cycle that we all live with ...It is something that you never plan on and it really hits you in the gut sometimes to watch your parent or brother ,sister ,child go through it but we choose to celebrate all the good things and not dwell on the bad there is enough of that in this crazy world, we do not need to add to it .. So life goes on and we will go on with it ... “So live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about their religion; respect others in their view, and demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life, beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and its purpose in the service of your people. Prepare a noble death song for the day when you go over the great divide. Always give a word or a sign of salute when meeting or passing a friend, even a stranger, when in a lonely place. Show respect to all people and grovel to none. When you arise in the morning give thanks for the food and for the joy of living. If you see no reason for giving thanks, the fault lies only in yourself. Abuse no one and no thing, for abuse turns the wise ones to fools and robs the spirit of its vision. When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home.” Chief Tecumseh

Trying not to.. thanks So this is what it looks like after two operations and 2 and 1/2 years of radiation and everything associated with it I feel bad for him he will be 94 this Friday and all he wants to do is work in his wood shop and make sawdust Oh my the world gets to be a different place as we age. All I want to do is get to a shoot either spring or fall I want to do it while I am relatively young like Elk hunting not going to happen today.... That is his wrist underside he now has 6 of those growing at a unbelievable rate he is a 30 year warrant officer Army man and tough as they come...

    My last Elk

Day two, Ok I left the Elk on day one going to their bedding grounds, so i thought they would reverse their pattern the next day... HA I was wrong. they stayed around that ridge and the bulls split the herd into two groups I finally found one of them and it had the spike with the fork in it I hiked down a ridge to get to him only to find him 300 yard from where he had last been... so my shot was 400 yards I got prone got the cross hairs on him and started squeezing and bam a cow came by and away he went after her Crap! I saw him from time to time in the timber but no other shot came up so It won't happen on this day. Day Three looked till noon no find em...... it was a bust. Day four ,took a different approach tried glassing from a mountain up higher on the way in saw a spike before I could get the rig stopped he boogied. saw a big nice mature mulie passed him so i could keep looking for elk drove to another perch to glass the country I had been hunting and saw another spike at 560 yards to far for my carbine but watched him till he got in a better place went down the mountain and was watching him when BOOM! a rifle goes off from below us. Well their is no roads below us till you get to the river and that road is on the other side of the river WTF! so the spike I was watching took off running and was gone FUK! so the day was bust but i wanted to know where the hell these guys came from... so got in the rig drove 10 miles back to the river crossed and drove ten miles up river and found 2 pickups parked on a turnout and looked across the river and their were two kayaks.. well crap someone has found my hidey hole ok at this point I am frustrated.. taking a couple days off...and my step dads cancer has come back with a vengeance his only hope is to take his arm off , but I am not sure they will operate because of COPD and he can hardly walk or breath he is on oxygen.. so this is going to play out as well.... to be continued.
  23. no $hit no wonder there are none to buy......! lol
  24. Get it stripped down to the way you are going to sell it, then go fishing put 1450.00 on it advertise it in this day and age with so much hard to find you will probably get a bite or two.... nice gun..

    My last Elk

Day one. Got to the ridge at 6.00 sun just starting to show some light took off down the trail to my secret spot and did not make it a 1/4 mile and there was a nice big mule deer buck standing in the trail. He saw me a stepped off the downhill side of the trail behind a little ridge I just kept walking when i got to where he stepped off I got sneaky and just peeked down the ridge there he was looking for me at 50 yards. There he was a nice big mature 4 point but his left side was like a cactus all knarly I love non typical deer I could have shot him but if I had all the elk in the valley would have got out of dodge and I would not see anything so i tipped my hat to mr. buck and kept on down the trail. About a 1/2 mile further down total elevation drop now 800 ft. I spotted a cow elk about a thousand yards away then a calf and got into sneeky mode ,checked the wind it sucked it was blowing towards them so I climbed above the trail and as fast as I could went farther down the canyon till i was past them i checked they were still in the same spot never winded me and now i am behind them the wind is in my favor. I start glassing and the elk started popping out of the landscape they were feeding just coming out onto a big grassy knob I raged it at 356 ,then I heard a bugle it is getting go time and I am on full alert then I see a bull not huge but a mature 5 point chasing a cow I have to go down the hill to intercept them and get a shot it is to thick with trees where I am at. Wind is still good i work my way from tree to tree and they are still coming from my left to my right , then a cow pops out just below me I am pinned down can not move if I spook them now they will leave the country . So here I sit next to a burned tree watch total of 12 or 13 cows and caves and One nice bull and two spikes one of which has really thick spikes and a fork on one side, I am not picky first one to present a shot gets the prize...been almost a hour now 7.00AM they are feeding in and out of brush and timber about 150 to 200 yards from me but every time i get the crosshairs on one of the bulls they go behind a tree or I am not steady enough to make the shot it is hard to shoot 30 degrees down hill while sitting on a grassy slippery slope and I can not get the gun into prone and the tree is not much help. they are continually on the move and I can not move without them spotting me it is exhausting being on full adrenaline alert without engaging finally the 5 point comes into view and stops I am pretty steady and start taking the slack out of the trigger I am expecting it to fire any second and crap he whirls and chases a cow crap! then the spike with the fork is standing in the same place and i get set on him squeezing the trigger and crap he walks over the ridge FUK! Now they are all moving over the ridge two more time I get one in the sights and can not make it happen they just will not stop moving.. then they are gone! I know where they are going........... So I take off and moving down hill and to my right they are heading for the bedding grounds and to get there they will pass through the most ugly canyon where I hunt solid rock and little dirt cliffs and steeper than the back of Gods head....I get where I can use my binos again and there they are in the bottom heading to the next ridge I range them they are 350 to 400 I can make that shot with the 308 but it is where they are I can not pack one out of that hell hole they stop on the ridge just across from me I am prone now looking at any one of the bulls they start feeding again But i know I am not going to pull the trigger it will not happen today maybe tomorrow.
