Day one. Got to the ridge at 6.00 sun just starting to show some light took off down the trail to my secret spot and did not make it a 1/4 mile and there was a nice big mule deer buck standing in the trail. He saw me a stepped off the downhill side of the trail behind a little ridge I just kept walking when i got to where he stepped off I got sneaky and just peeked down the ridge there he was looking for me at 50 yards. There he was a nice big mature 4 point but his left side was like a cactus all knarly I love non typical deer I could have shot him but if I had all the elk in the valley would have got out of dodge and I would not see anything so i tipped my hat to mr. buck and kept on down the trail. About a 1/2 mile further down total elevation drop now 800 ft. I spotted a cow elk about a thousand yards away then a calf and got into sneeky mode ,checked the wind it sucked it was blowing towards them so I climbed above the trail and as fast as I could went farther down the canyon till i was past them i checked they were still in the same spot never winded me and now i am behind them the wind is in my favor. I start glassing and the elk started popping out of the landscape they were feeding just coming out onto a big grassy knob I raged it at 356 ,then I heard a bugle it is getting go time and I am on full alert then I see a bull not huge but a mature 5 point chasing a cow I have to go down the hill to intercept them and get a shot it is to thick with trees where I am at. Wind is still good i work my way from tree to tree and they are still coming from my left to my right , then a cow pops out just below me I am pinned down can not move if I spook them now they will leave the country . So here I sit next to a burned tree watch total of 12 or 13 cows and caves and One nice bull and two spikes one of which has really thick spikes and a fork on one side, I am not picky first one to present a shot gets the prize...been almost a hour now 7.00AM they are feeding in and out of brush and timber about 150 to 200 yards from me but every time i get the crosshairs on one of the bulls they go behind a tree or I am not steady enough to make the shot it is hard to shoot 30 degrees down hill while sitting on a grassy slippery slope and I can not get the gun into prone and the tree is not much help. they are continually on the move and I can not move without them spotting me it is exhausting being on full adrenaline alert without engaging finally the 5 point comes into view and stops I am pretty steady and start taking the slack out of the trigger I am expecting it to fire any second and crap he whirls and chases a cow crap! then the spike with the fork is standing in the same place and i get set on him squeezing the trigger and crap he walks over the ridge FUK! Now they are all moving over the ridge two more time I get one in the sights and can not make it happen they just will not stop moving.. then they are gone! I know where they are going........... So I take off and moving down hill and to my right they are heading for the bedding grounds and to get there they will pass through the most ugly canyon where I hunt solid rock and little dirt cliffs and steeper than the back of Gods head....I get where I can use my binos again and there they are in the bottom heading to the next ridge I range them they are 350 to 400 I can make that shot with the 308 but it is where they are I can not pack one out of that hell hole they stop on the ridge just across from me I am prone now looking at any one of the bulls they start feeding again But i know I am not going to pull the trigger it will not happen today maybe tomorrow.

WEll , a monkey wrench flew into the plan, woke up yesterday took a walk out to the orchard to get some pears, found a dead deer right at the fence. We have had a outbreak of a disease that is spread in the water they drink by gnats once they get it they die within 36 hours this is the 5th we have found around here first on our property so i got the tractor and buried it , then went to town and bought a ton of pellets for the stove while unloading that smelled something else dead and we found another within 30 yards of the house so I am going to be burying deer and looking for others pretty sad both were does with fawns have not seen the fawns yet.....

New LR-308 won't fire rounds that come from magazines
Magwa replied to RAH's topic in General Discussion
what he said above and get a magpul magazine and try it as well I have the exact same gun it runs flawlessly -
I have seen so many guys have issues like this only to ask and see their gun and find out the bolt and inside of upper is dry as the Sahara desert after a 1000 year drought is this you ? is so get yourself some Mobile one synthetic oil 30 or 40 wt and soak your BCG in it for a couple of weeks when you are not shooting stick it in there this oil adheres to the metal and your bcg will become slick and easy to clean main question is yours dry? it should be pretty wet like almost dripping until all the parts can marry up and be happy....

In 6.5 CM H4350 is about like peanut butter is to jelly it is the bomb I have always shot the Hornady 140 ELD for steel matches but now in 6.5 x284 Norma I shoot berger Hybrids and IMO they are a better bullet the whole deal with expanding mandrels is to get consistent bullet release I use them in bolt guns because I have no Crimp but in a gas gun I am not sure it would work the same ,someone with more know how than me would have to answer that . But loading for a gas gun and a bolt gun are two different animals unless you are loading one at a time and then what have you gained might as well have a bolt gun... I anneal my brass after every two firings do Gas gun shooters anneal? I do not know as I do not try to be a surgeon with mine out past 600 that is my self imposed limit for my 308 but with a 16 inch barrel and factory barnes 168 TTSX no critter wants me shooting at them... Here is a question for anyone who knows do you think a gas gun can be MOA at 1000 if so what or how would you load for it ?

that is a good system as long as you have power I have a 10 K gen, and it will keep the well running and all the freezers as well as the kitchen lights we have a gas stove I have friends that put in a 3000 gallon cistern that they fill from rain water during the winter they add copper sulfate to it at the rate of 1 223 case full per 300 gallons that keeps all algae down and it is clear water but only for fire and watering trees etc it is uphill from them they have a solar pump that goes from their catch barrels to the cistern with a float valve works slick and in a emergency they just let gravity work the sprinklers...

Thanks everyone for the kind words we have fires going again near here so I may have to use it yet this year...I am building a pallet that I can mount the whole thing on so I can use the forks on my tractor to lift it into the pick up if we had to fight our way out of here or make a stand in a open field I could use all the water around us still figuring out ways to use it all my neighbors are getting IBC tanks and filling them at the heads of their driveways that way with it on a pickup you can fill from the extra tanks..I live on a one way in ,one way out road so could be easy to get trapped in here in a high wind event...

awesome.. I like that Idea...

Wow sounds like a blast,no pun intended so i assume everyone is running gas guns in the smaller calibers? this steel thing out here is all bolt guns from 200 to 1300 with a bonus mile shot. You are right zero is the key to it all and if you do anything to the gun re check zero... I once took my action and barrel out of the Magpul stock to see what trigger I had it was a rifle basic, i have replaced it with a Elfman 700 and it is a amazing trigger anyway I put the action back in and tightened it up and then went and shot I was 2 Moa high just from different tension on screws so yeah you have to have zero... I like the Idea about no bag but damn when i get out past 800 I have to have it still to see my vapor trail and impact but i might have to start improvising with clothing etc. So our matches are broken down in two different phases big game and small game ,longest shot in small game is like 700 but small game starts with a set like your phase one, 4 targets first is 2 inch at 200 yards you have to hit it to move on 4 shots total at 2 inch 4 inch triangle 4 inch round and 6 inch square then the yardages start going out as well as uphill across canyon etc. Big game is the same but bigger targets and longer distances but that first 4 targets on the same hanger is where you win or lose and both are times fastest with best score wins
