New guy in CA

Hi,

New guy in enemy territory (California, or DPROK as I prefer).  Built a .308 AR off of a MATEN receiver set, wish they came together as trouble-free as AR-15s.  Long time lurker first time poster.  Just here to soak up information and get advice.

Not new to .308 or even ARs (own a M1A and a couple AR-15s), but .308 ARs are another ball of wax.  I like my .308 AR but getting it to work right has been a gigantic headache from day one, it has certainly given me pause about building them versus just buying a factory .308 AR for my next one.

Thanks for the awesome welcome guys. ^-^

Not sure what the etiquette is about posting issues (if they should go in this topic or a dedicated topic in a different forum), but I'll list my build here and probably also in the MATEN forum.

MATEN upper/lower matched receiver set

Stock is a Magpul UBR.  Forearm is a 14" Parallax Tactical fore-end, and the barrel device is a Griffin Armament 7.62 Flashcomp.

Basically, right now, the rifle is a bolt-action. <lmao>

Mord  sounds like you have the right buffer and buffer spring..and i guess you have the right buffer tube? So, make sure your gas block is on correctly over the gas port....open the adj gas block all the way...you gotta lube the heck out of the bcg on a new rifle as it will be tight.  shotgun the rifle muzzle pointed down...drop in the bcg and see if the bcg almost goes into battery and not hanging up .

So have it lubed put in a single round in the mag...fire the rifle and function check to see if the bolt catch locks it back?  :) Wash

Oh dont use cheap crap steel cased ammo

to make sure your gas block is on correct....block chamber and either blow compressed air down from the muzzle or lip it and give it a blow to see if the air is making it down the gas tube

Well the UBR comes with its own receiver extension ("buffer tube") which should be carbine length from what I understand (worked on my AR-15, used a carbine length spring and all has been well).

I cracked the adj. gas block all the way open, lubed the heck out of the bolt, the carrier, and the charging handle. I've done all kinds of crazy things, removed the buffer detent and spring, tried different mags (Lancer L7 and Magpul .308 Pmags), and I only ever feed brass cased ammo through it (combination of Freedom, Aussie surplus and Prvi Partizan so far).

I knew I was going to have problems with this gun.  At round #8, my ejector pin walked out of the gun mid-cycle and bent against the edge of the BCG from lack of pressure from the ejector springs.  I attributed some of the early issues to lube but that bent pin was the start of the craziness.  Meanwhile I've now gone through a second bolt/bolt carrier group, tried different mags, lube, etc.  Always used the full power ALG spring that came with my trigger, and not lightweight spring.

I have to push the bolt to get it into battery on the first shot (load from locked bolt), and every shot thereafter otherwise I get light primer strikes.  Hence why I joke I have a bolt action AR.

Welcome, from the 916. If you're still having issues, lay them down on us. Depending on your local, we have a huge west coast ARIZONA presence, we should be able to help.

I just felt a huge need to correct that statement.  Everybody else welcomed the guy, and is working on the problem, so that's all I really have to add right now.

Appreciate the opener, Rob.  :)) <thumbsup>

Which buffer and buffer spring are you using?

I personally suggest an AR10 or CS Flat Wire spring.

Possibly a heavier buffer too.

Well, I looked into a heavier buffer, the DPMS buffer/spring I have is labeled for .308.  3.8 oz. seems awfully light for a carbine buffer for .308 so I ordered the spring/buffer combo from Heavybuffers.com in hopes of fixing my issues.
