Hi Guys,

Just getting ready to build a new gas gun with a bigger bore and thought this would be a great place to start!

Intrigued with the .338 Federal idea... ;-)

Welcome to the forum from Washington. There is another member on here that goes by the screen name 98Z5V, he is is working on a 338 Fed AR.

Lots of knowledge here on the boards. Read a bunch and don't be afraid to ask questions...

Please also do a forum search for "The Rule". It'll help you in the long run.

Hey guys, I have a opportunity to buy this barrel for $250:

Black_Hole_weaponry_Barrel.thumb.jpg.9fe

Its a Black Hole Weaponry barrel chambered in .260, 50 rounds through it total.

It is 24" in length and has spiral fluting in from gas block on as well as threaded end.

I have had difficulty determining what to chamber this gal in, but being a LR bolt guy before my coming over to experiment in the gas side of things, maybe a .260 makes some sense. I reload and have tons of once fired .308 brass.

I initially though 338 Fed, and have since been thinking 6.5 creed which might be a better choice for a gas magazine fed gun as opposed to the .260...? errrr.

What say you?

I would perform some due diligence on the spiral fluting. Fluting is normally used to lighten a barrel, but in doing so it can cause irregular expansion and contraction of the metal, which can effect accuracy. The top quality fluted barrels are designed to compensate or allow for it. I have never seen spiral fluting like that, and if it was me I would like some data and rationale for it. It looks cool, but if it doesn't have an effective function it is performing, I wouldn't buy it. Maybe some other members have some experience with them.

not only that but a AR10 type rifle with that barrel will weigh a ton! do some research before committing to it get a good idea of what you want to build first then get on with it ,welcome to the jungle... :)

Was just wandering thru gander mountain (ack!!) they had a Black Rain Ordanance ar15 with a short barrel similar to this and in my honest opinion it looked like shitt!! And seeing how BRO likes to make "pretty" rifles it would lead me to the assumption that it's done for no reason but to be "eye pleasing" or "tacticool"

The 260 Remington concept is a good one though if you are thinking distance shooting. I don't own one myself, but the friends who do rave about them. And I see their targets. Very impressive.

Ya I would like to build a 6.5 CM or 260 Rem one day, maybe next. ;-)

This one I initially thought about the 338 Fed but early into it resolved to just go 308 as an addition to the mainstream domestic armory stock. lol

Will be good to have a basic, serviceable, 308 gas gun in the mix.

Kind of like  a cwp, everyone should have one right. (Maybe not "everyone" but you get the idea.)
