Thresher61
Hello This is my first post on this forum. Just wanted to introduce myself and give a little background and ask a couple questions, hope this is the spot. I'm Thresher61-Steve I live in Keller, TX just North of Fort Worth, TX. I am 50 years old, my mouth gets me into more trouble than anything else. But I've figured out that at least everyone knows where I stand. I am very trustworthy, loyal, don't lie, served my time in the military 12 years(Navy),very sufficient with any weapon in my hand. I own 2 businesses, a land personnel business & a custom Outdoor Sports business(invent, design fabricate anything, mainly customized live bait tanks for off shore tournament fishing boats, and build custom sand rails), now I hv discovered the AR world who knows built more than a few AR15's and .300 BO. My shop is always open to anyone on any forum I'm on no charge for use of any tools. I love meeting people, and kids. I'm not a rich man, but yet I'm the richest man in the world as far as family & friends. Family is #1 to me. I hope this site helps me as much as the AR15 forum did when I started out building my AR's. There are a lot of folks out there with a ton of experience and will actually share it. Those people have a heart of gold. I am s seed firmly America this November, I love my Freedom and "hate" anyone who disrespects it. I'll help anyone who actually needs it. That's me could go on but that's another book, lol. I use all parts that are the most upgraded most customized build look. Money isn't a problem when it comes to my gun parts or fishing rods and reels. It usually is a showcase type item. I preach to everyone, looks don't kill the animal the gun and shooter does. I have had this problem my whole life. I buy something and then spend a lot of money upgrading it. Yes I've gotten help on this but dudnt help lol. I always go for upper end stuff most of the time it's for the better. I believe slit in the you get what you pay for terminology. I am starting a AR10(DPMS Style) .308. I don't care to argue the fine razors edge about what is a actual AR10. I call the gun I'm building an AR10 .308thsts that take it or leave it. I don't get along with overbearing loud mouth know it all asses. People like that are usually trying to cover up either their horrible sex life's, being a run away dad not paying child support, or overall black Karma type person. See my mouth does it every time. I have been getting into long distance shooting and with accuracy on top of long distance. Any ways getting back on my gun build. I found my receiver Company. Both upper & lower are matched, and I'm looking for the barrel. I have been talking to Andy Kreiger of Kreiger Arms Co. & J.P. of Black Hole Wesponary. I am trying to figure out if there is really that much difference between 22" & 24" length barrels, after I figure out the length then the difference btwn regular, semi-bull, bull, I use JPEnterprises Sikent Capture No-Kick Buffer system in all my guns and this build will be no different. As for my muzzle devise I will be using the Alamo Four Star Cowel Injection muzzle devise. I rate this one of the nicest but exoensive brake/compensator on the market today along with an adjustable gas block and my buffer system this .308 should be super smooth shooter. The Black Hole barrel is going to run approx. 400.00-485.00,the Kreiger looking more like 900.00. CAN ANYONE GIVE ME.....their opinion on the barrel length, size?whatcyoud go with on this build and why. This educates me and I like to know why someone chooses a certisn barrel.size doesn't matter to me I'm 6' 5"?240lbs, play college ball and can tote a pretty good size gun. But this will be used for Elkhunting and Long distance hunting. Putting a 10x-12x power Night Force scope on it w/2" sun shade with a off set sight made by Advantage Tactical(I hv Advantage sights on all my pistols, improved my shooting by 30% better, any sight that can improve my shooting like that is worth a looksey at.thanks everyone and sorry for the long email. I am a talker I spend so much time on the road by myself when I get going I'm off to the races. Sorry I will cut them short from now on. Just had slot to say lol. Thanks for any help I can get. Hope I didn't piss too many people off. If so sorry buck up change things then. lol, hv a great day GOD Bless", Stand tall" Carry Full Clips' Be Ready 24 hrs a Day'
Matt.Cross
Welcome to the forums! My first suggestion would be a Criterion 18.5" Mid-weight barrel, I've had extremely good results from mine.

washguy
Welcome aboard from Big D.....18" barrel will do anything ya want... out of all my 308's the 18" stays at home mostly 16" does anything I wanna do BUT since you are such a big ol boy you might wanna go 20" and that length will also compensate for any shortcomings LOL Wash Edited September 1, 2016 by washguy

Thresher61
I was kind of thinking so, 24" sure is a long piece of metal to swing around. Thinking bout bumping it down to at least a 20" maybe 18". I know my 18" .300 BO will group em tight. Thanks for the reply

survivalshop
Welcome from Florida . Unless you plan on a Bench Gun , the 18" Criterion Barrel with the right ammo & nut behind the Trigger , will give sub MOA results .
Thresher61
Thanks I appreciate it. I am hard headed an trying to figure out why all A-bolts are 24"-26"long. This gun is going to be for long distance shooting 1,000yards. I've got friends that are into the long range shooting. I think it's pretty neat so Ifigured I would build a AR10 .308 DPMS style gun and go down with them.

Btw criterion is a bunch of former krieger guys, I like both companies I've talked to josh a few times and a good friend of mine works for krieger. Just gotta give criterion some love not only because they're a site sponsor, but Josh is good for coming around and Answeing questions. The issue with a AR rifle vs a Bolt gun is weight , its been proven the extra Barrel length doesn't nessicssarly mean better groups in Semi Auto rifles , LaRue & others have good 1K performance with shorter barrels . I personally would not go over 20" , unless , as said , you want to shoot from a bench only or have a good rifle Barer My 20" HB rifle is over 12# with glass , but is a great shooter . LaRue rifles have won world Military Sniper match's & says a lot for a shorter Barreled rifle . Whats good about an AR is , if you don't like the Barrel or how it performs , its a easy thing to replace it . Some of the good Barrel Makers . like Criterion will work with you if the Barrel doesn't perform as its expected . Magwa
Welcome from Idaho biggest state in the USA, after you pound it out flat that is ...... well barrel length is all dependent on what you plan to do with it, if you are just going to plunk it up on a bench and shoot paper or steel the length does not matter but!!!!! if you ever want to hunt with it think long and hard about barrel length. with a 24 inch semi bull barrel and a nightforce scope the y are made about 5 miles from me you are looking at 20 lbs and you will not hunt with it no way no how unless hunting is sitting in a tower or something like that , and that is each to his own but you came to the right place to find out... good luck...
