CentexOutdoors
First off, hello everyone.. i've been hunting most of my life which started in alaska shooting squirrels with a .22lr and has progressed to dove, duck and the like. One thing i haven't done as much as i like is hog hunting, deer hunting, and things bigger than deer.. The more i research "AR-10" type platforms (yes, i know AR implies Armalite) the more i keep coming across the DPMS LR-308 which ive seen as low as like 750 or so. it throws me off because most of the "10's" you see are well over 1200 dollars (like the S&W MP10)..So i guess i cant decide whether DPMS makes a quality firearm or not..and if they don't, are the parts to upgrade, fix, etc plentiful enough to enjoy this purchase? I also plan to pair it with an ATN X-Sight ll HD.. Thoughts?
MikedaddyH
Welcome from AZ ! A DPMS complete rifle is a good solid rifle and a great choice for a LR308. Find one at a good price and buy it.

Thats all ive ever heard about their complete rifles. id like to upgrade the barrel to a 18 or 20 since the ultimate goal is to hunt deer, hog, etc.i think in the long run, itll pay itself off in the amount of food my family will enjoy. shepp
Welcome to the forum from southern wi, one thing to keep in mind these rifles get heavy fast, 18" barrel is plenty for taking game at a good distance. Also I own a DPMS complete rifle, I bought a higher grade model but I've modded it out a bit, but out the box it shot better then me
MikedaddyH
I picked up my DPMS rifle 8 years ago and only had one broken part and have shot over 2500+ rounds . A 16" barrel would be a great start. You will buy more guns, it addictive. Second gun make it like you want it , you will know what you want/need in a gun ! It would be strictly in a stand or something to that effect. 48 minutes ago, MikedaddyH said: I picked up my DPMS rifle 8 years ago and only had one broken part and have shot over 2500+ rounds . Spoke to the wife and she isnt opposed to me looking at an SW MP10 which would be amazing. that would be a step up from the DPMS for sure. I'm not new to guns by any stretch what so ever. I've owned 556 and the like. When it comes to deer, yote, hog, etc..thats where my knowlesdge falls off. I've lived and hunted in alaska but not old enough to go moose, elk, hunting. 392heminut
If you're okay with spending more than what an entry level DPMS costs then look around and find the rifle that has the most features you're wanting that is in your price range and go with that. I guarantee that after you've had it a while you'll want to upgrade stuff, especially if you hang around this forum and listen to this bunch of enablers! You will not find a group of more knowledgeable and helpful folks on the 308 AR platform than these guys but they WILL help you spend your money! beantown
Here is another warm welcome wave from North Carolina. I own a DPMS LR-308 Oracle. The 16" HBAR barrel can shoot a heck of a lot better than I can. One thing DPMS did right is their LR-308. Buy it cheap (read blank canvas), mod it the way you want, then shoot the snot out of it! Armed Eye Doc
Welcome from Texas. Another option is RRA LAR8. It is more proprietary and therefore, less modifiable. But they do make a great rifle.

sketch
Two options in the last year for me were the windam weponary. Only held it once and it was lite! And the live free rifle (new) i have not seen or held.. not sure if either are capable of modification over all but triggers and such should be? And at a price point that should leave the door open. I own a RRA and havent moded anythig but the trigger and buffer/(slash) spring! Happy hunting!

Happy hunting! yeah, i've looked at RRA and for what you get, it's a little pricier.. if I'm not mistaken, a lot of their stuff is proprietary so it's not easily interchangeable. I'd like to change things like the trigger, and anything else I could upgrade. Windham Weaponry has decent prices and if I'm not mistaken, lifetime warranty. unforgiven
I also have an LAR-8 RRA,they say you can't mix barrels because of their proprietary barrel nut. But one of the guys here has [he is also a gunsmith]. I changed the RRA 2 stage match to a SSA-E,added a LaRue A-peg grip and Battle comp compensator. The rest of the rifle is totally ambidextrous. For the money it's a damn good rifle. When I first came here there were many issues with the DPMS platform wasn't till later realizing that the root cause of many problems in the larger platform were the mixing and matching of parts. It a different animal than the 5.56 side. That being said I have Aero'oM5 built on the DPMS model and an=m very happy with it. Just my 2 mags. bubbas4570
Think long and hard about weight with a 308AR, as my 16" APF carbine is just under 11 pounds unloaded. It has a full length free float forearm, and fixed Magpul buttstock....just for your info.
