So I got a guy that offered a Colt custom shop M4 upper in trade for a 1911 I have up for sale.

It looks like value wise I would come out ahead, but just the colt upper costs almost twice what I can build a rifle for.

And keep in mind this is just the upper only....

I imagine the upper would only keep its value if I didnt shoot it, so Im thinking I dont want the deal...

What do y'all think?

That upper - in the old days, I'd say it's worth it, because of the adherence to the mil-spec standard.  Nowadays, there's tons of manufacturers that meet or beat the mil-spec standard.

There's a KAC M4 RAS on there - pick them up all day long now for much cheaper than the $400 retail.  Matech BUIS on there, again, pick them up all day long for cheaper than retail.  I've seen some of those as cheap as $50 brand new.  Usually, they're closer to $100 brand new.

Is that an all original Colt 1911  ,like a Older 70 series or 80 series , or is it one of the newer models?

The 1911 is a Wiley Clapp LW commander.

I have several of the matech sights, and I like them, but yeah I bought low on all of them, and I recently bout a Troy flip up rear for $50 on sale, and the rail system isnt a big thrill for me.

These uppers still seem to go over 1k, but it seems like its more of a collectors item than something useful.

It looks like about $550 worth of parts to me... With a $500 cardboard box....

A Colt enthusiast will pay for it. I guess you have to decide if you can wait for that person to come by the shop.

I'm a Colt enthusiast, but Im not one to keep something I cant use laying around.

I think I may pass on the deal....

A wise man once said "you can't drink a box"....you can't shoot one either.

It might have been a "wise ass"...I'm not sure yet.

I think if I did get it I'd have to shoot the piss out of it to justify it.  And Id probably want a Colt lower to go with it.

1911's I have a hard time selling and an easy time buying. Nice looking pistol but I have too many already. I like my pre ban Colt AR15A2 HBAR,  but that is a completely different can of worms then that upper your looking at. I have relegated it to distance shooting with 175gr Hornady BTHP reloads. Accurate as all get out. Was mil spec until I switched out the upper.

Tell him to go sell his upper to a collector and come back with the cash and you'll sell the pistol to him. Every time I've traded for something I didn't really need or want I've ended up thinking why the fuk did I do that later!

I have done that too many times to count!

And I have the boxes full of crap in my garage to prove it!
