Texas church shooting: Gunman kills 2, 'heroic' parishioners take down shooter

A gunman opened fire in a Texas church on Sunday, killing two people and injuring others before two "heroic" parishioners shot and killed him at the scene, police said.

The shooting unfolded around 10 a.m. at the West Freeway Church of Christ, in the city of White Settlement, just outside Fort Worth, police said.

"It's all very tragic," Fort Worth Fire Department spokesman Mike Drivdahl told reporters.

White Settlement Police Chief J.P. Bevering told reporters Sunday afternoon that the gunman entered the church and sat down with the parishioners. He then got up, pulled out a shotgun, and shot two parishioners who died at a nearby hospital.

Two armed parishioners who were volunteer security guards returned fire and killed the gunman.

"The suspect was stopped thanks to the quick and heroic actions of those safety members inside the church," Bevering said.

Separately, two people who suffered minor injuries were treated and released at the scene.

During a news conference later Sunday, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick lauded the quick reactions of the church’s "well-trained" security team, calling their heroism "unparalleled."

He said, "This team responded quickly and within six seconds, the shooting was over."

He noted that the security team's quick response saved an "untold number of lives."

The victims ranged in age from 30 to 60 years old, according to MedStar, the ambulance service provider to Fort Worth and other cities in North Texas.

A witness to the shooting told KTVT the gunman walked up to a server with a shotgun during communion and opened fire before parishioners inside the church took him down.

“It was the most scariest thing. You feel like your life is flashing before you," Isabel Arreola told the television station. "I was so worried about my little one."

The church was apparently live streaming the service when the shooting took place, Fox 4 reported.

"Unfortunately, this country has seen so many of these that we've actually gotten used to it at this point. And it's tragic and it's a terrible situation, especially during the holiday season," Jeoff Williams, a regional director with the Texas Department of Public Safety, said at the news conference. "I would like to point out that we have a couple of heroic parishioners who stopped short of just anything that you can even imagine, saved countless lives, and our hearts are going out to them and their families as well."

Images from the scene showed a massive emergency response. Texas Gov. Gregg Abbott called the shooting an "evil act of violence" at the church.

"Places of worship are meant to be sacred, and I am grateful for the church members who acted quickly to take down the shooter and help prevent further loss of life," the governor said in a statement. "Cecilia and I ask all Texans to join us in praying for the White Settlement community and for all those affected by this horrible tragedy."

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton tweeted about the shooting, asking for prayers for "any victims and their families, this congregation, and the law enforcement officials at the scene."

Agents from the Dallas Field Division of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives said they were responding to the scene of the reported shooting.

Local and federal law enforcement agencies were continuing to investigate the shooter's identity and motivation for the shooting. The identities of the deceased were not released.

White Settlement is located about eight miles west of Fort Worth.

It was just recently that carrying in church was "legal."  It had not stopped me though.  It is sad that churches have become a target.

But here is some more praise for those who took quick action.  I hope they do not suffer any consequences, legal, emotional or financial.

The first guy killed might not have been killed if he would have hit the floor. the dude had the shotgun pointed right at him and he's fumbling to get his gun out. well when the guy has the drop on you it's time to duck and run.

For probably 10 years now my pastor has encouraged all former and active LEO's in his congregation to carry, along with others that he knows are proficient. He is also a gun owner (as in LOTS of guns!) and very proficient in using them although I don't think he carries during services. I know for a fact he has a couple of 1911's with really good trigger pulls!😏

I'm guessing nothing on motive yet? I was curious about that, but yeah, crazy situation. I carry anytime I'm outside my house and legally allowed, otherwise in the house its nearby and a nock on the door makes me put it on me...or an odd noise.

I'm hoping that this sends a message to anyone contemplating this shiit that there is a chance that you will be dealt with swiftly and decisively if you try it! Even in a place you might think would be gun free!

I don’t think I would go anywhere in a few states...Texas being one of them...and expect it to be a gun free zone. Even if it’s labeled as so.

I love it. They’re on the radio playing Biden when this law was passed in September claiming it was extremely irrational and a bad idea to allow people to legally carry a firearm in church.

Back to say I don’t love that this happened...I’m sorry for those who lost. I love that there is an example of good guys with guns shorten the length of the evil bastards plans.

I think most of these clowns are suicidal, they have to know chances are they will die. but why can't the chickenshits just kill themselves instead of innocent people.

Mods, remove at your discretion.

i don't think it'll get removed by Mods here.  It needs to be seen, and learned from.  If BitChute pulls it later - I downloaded it, and I'll host it myself.

Wow. That was quite the shot.

I wonder how much further that could have gone while they waited for the police to arrive?

I also wonder if the claim will be made that he only opened fire because the man he was pointed at was drawing his gun?  It’s not why he opened fire, but from the crazy side of the conversation I believe the claim will be made that he fired in self defense.  We know that’s not the case, but it’s hard to understand liberal logic sometimes.

He presented the firearm first.  Everything after that presentation is self defense.

I told you...logic and reality won’t work here. We can’t think like a liberal, but being in California I can get pretty close.

Good work on the part of the church member shooter. He saved lives by his prompt action.

That bullet carried some divine intervention on it. Dude was on the move at a pretty good distance...DRT. Lives were definitely saved by that shot. The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun, is a good guy with a gun. I hope the next mental case down the line starts to figure that out.

In varying news reports, it's stated that the gunman was "bleeding profusely from the head" and that the guy that fired the shot - only fired one shot.

Headshot at 25-ish yards, under pressure - is pretty damned impressive...  :hail:

My nephew sent me the live footage.  Not sure if it will forward to anyone else.  It seems to unfold slowly but is ended quickly.  The one guy had trouble "clearing leather" and unfortunately took a round center mass before he could get any shots off.

Seconds after the shooting was over guns armed congregation members start showing up in force.  Certainly glad to see that it was not only ended quickly but a Church service on Sunday (at least in Texas) is no longer a "soft" target........Cliff

A link to the footage is posted above.  I know the church I go to is not unarmed.  There is at least one gun there.
