Side charging upper?

AirForceAR

Recommended Posts

Hola muchachos! Been lurking for quite some time and figured I'd go ahead and post something lol.

Question: Does anyone make a side charging upper? Is it even possible? Does anyone have one?

I feel like this would be perfect for a bench rifle such as the one I'm building. Started with a stock, "used" (previously owned, never fired) DPMS LR308 24",

Magpul MIAD grip and PRS stock(both flat dark earth) on the way, UTG 8-12" bipod, and a UTG 3-9x40 TF2+ scope on a Burris P.E.P.R. mount.

Before anyone comments on my air rifle scope lol it was thrown in by the shop I bought my rifle from because I also bought another Springfield XD-S 45 at the same time.

Any recommendations for optics to reach out to 500 yds would be appreciated as well.

And my name is Mike, I'm an Air Force Vet and I live in michigan. I also like flowers by surprise and long walks on the beach haha. That's all for now ;)

welcome from Tucson. I was stationed at huachuca, and never left. AZ caught me too :) as stated above, ASA makes side chargers and they are an AZ company. I know there one or two more but I can't think of them right now. I've seen a few guys who just mill a slot in their upper and tap their carrier.

You will also have to change your Bolt Carrier to a side charger also . Fulton Armory used to sell one also , but I don't see it on there sight , only a side charging BCG , with a right side charging handle . Most I have seen are on the left side of the receiver.

Why change to a side charger ? It its because or not being able to reach the handle under the scope , there are alternatives .Check Out, Mecharmor charging handles , TacOps -1, they are Ambidextrous & wider than stock & work good on my 308's with large scopes & they are others on the market .

Compared to a std charging handle w/extended latch.

The Fulton Armory system is a reciprocating side charging system. You have the option of using the rear charging handle or the right side charging handle.

There are companies that make a left side reciprocating handle as well. It looks very similar to the Fulton Armory version. LAR Grizzly used to make a dual side charge upper, with no rear charging handle.

On top of it all, there are the left side non-reciprocating handles. American Spirit Arms, JP Enterprise, SWORD Int... just to name a few. These uppers generally do NOT have a rear charging handle (I believe the JP version has a rear handle still).

I could mill your upper receiver and lathe up a charging handle - easy conversion, especially on those DPMS T-profile LR308 slickside uppers.

Thanks, but I'm a machinist and do all the milling work myself. Just kinda wondering if there was proven setups out there. It's not that I don't like the rear charging handle, it's just easy to rack the slide from the side when you've got a sight picture.

Good to know there are people I can shoot with once I move. I wanna get back into ipsc and idpa too.

Thanks for all the input guys! I'll probably just do a ambi charging handle first and see how that feels. Any recommendations for a different free float system that would compliment the magpul stock and grip? I want to ditch this fore end and get something that breathes a lil better and also has a rail on the bottom for bipod mounting. Here's my before and after haha.
