You have a couple things going on here... hence, different recommendations. IMHO, you need TWO slings. Those are two different things, completely. Now, don't think I'm crazy, here - for the carrying in wooded terrain, for hours, you need an old-school 3-point sling, and I'd only recommend the one from Tactical Tailor - it's wide, and the width disperses the load. 3-ppoint for walking long hours, especially with a pig like a .308 AR. On the shooting course stuff, I'd probably do with a 2-point, with some quick detach capability. Pick something wider than 1" webbing, but the 1" webbing might be alright, too - depends on the course and conditions. If you went with something like the BDS Tactical dual sling (I have a couple of those), then it's 1 1/4" webbing, and can convert from 2-point to single point (attaching to itself) in a matter of a second or two. Figure out your rear attachment point, and run a MagPul RSA on the front of the gun. That would do it. They make it padded, or unpadded (mine are unpadded).
