New AR owner from Tx

Hello everyone, I'm Kevin, and i live in the north Texas area.  Been away from guns and shooting for awhile, and am quickly getting a new collection going and renewing my love of shooting.

Never really wanted an AR style rifle, but decided it would be good to have one just in case.  I ended up picking up a DPMS Oracle in .308 a couple months ago and have been loving it ever since.  I've been enjoying the process of making her my own, which is a pretty daunting task with all the different parts available.

Been trying to find out as much info as I can about the AR platform and ended up finding this forum.  I've lurked and learned for the past few weeks, so now I'm deciding to join in and maybe one day help contribute some knowledge.

Here are some pics of how she sits right now, stock except the Vortex Viper 6.5-20x50, Diamondhead FF tube and i have a Rise Armament RA-140 trigger in the mail.  Next up is the muzzle break.

Thanks for the warm welcomes.  So if this is the "Land of Misfits", I should fit in.

@mrmackc, my buddy has a family hunting lease in Antelope, tx. with a great spot we set up for a shooting range.  We've been going there for the past month or so since we got some ar500 steel gongs ... oh and found out about tannerite.  We are probably going to cut down on range time there since it's getting closer to deer season.  Although we still see plenty of big bucks around even with all the shooting and tannerite booms going on.

If not going there, I like to go to Magnum in Sanger.  Always looking for new places though if there are any out there that aren't so restrictive.

I'm a pic whore, so here are some of our setup as of now, that's my bud in the pic.  Setup where we are in the pic has us shooting most of our targets around 137 yards based on range finder.  We can trek through light brush and a dried up creek if we want to get distances up to probably 500-600yds.  We actually replaced the green table with a big wood electrical spool.  I'm planning to collect material from jobsites to build a decent shaded shooting bay, but it's kind of low on the list of stuff to do.

Where do you go shootin?

On our family land, we shot in the sun around a big electric spool for years.  We had portable shades that helped a little.  A couple of years ago, we built a covered bench and it made all the difference.  If possible, I would recommend pushing that up the list a little bit.

You really need a good shade at fireing points for using a spotting scope or any electronic screened device to monitor targets and to log shots with.  That is why  I oftendrive miles and pay good money to shoot from well built sighting in ranges, rather than shoot off the truck tailgate and a folding table out in a pasture.

Welcome from big D       our 500 yd place in Leonard shut down...tell me bout Sanger... whats the deal on it?    Wash

Magnum Sport Center in Sanger is basically a hole in the wall type place.  Seperate pistol, rifle, shotgun range.  I've only shot on the rifle range and the RO lets you also shoot your pistols there so you don't have to walk up to the pistol range.  RO is a cool guy, isn't a range nazi, just as long as everyone is safe.

Multiple distances with pallets, three 4"x8" steel plates at 200 yds, but they are easy to knock off of the shitty hooks they use to hang them if using a large caliber.  I knocked two off within the first 5 shots, left the 3rd one up for the people shooting 5.56.  You can shoot as fast as you can control your shots.  No FMJ restriction.  Reduced price or sometimes free shooting if you bring pallets.  I'm going to talk to the owner about leaving some ar500 gongs out there for free shooting time.

No problem.  It is an enjoyable place.  The only odd thing is their hours, they are only open Wed, Fri, Sun 1-5, Sat is 10-5.  I'm usually there on Sunday and it has never been busy, usually only 4 or 5 others there and everyone is nice.  A guy let me shoot his .338 Lapua Mag a few weeks ago, that was fun.

Welcome from WI! how do uyou like that vortex viper?

I'm loving it.  Real clear crisp view, collects a lot of light, holding up like a champ through around 600 rds.  I haven't fully streched the gun or the scopes legs yet at only 200yds.  Here's a shitty pic from my phone through the scope, i was shooting the blue guy target with the grid target taped to the head, just to the left of the aim point of the pic.

Hey Wash, Magnum took down the steel plates at 200yds, some punks messed up the RO's stuff while he wasn't working and it pissed him off so he took his steel.  Said i could bring my gongs though.

Although i did enjoy shooting a paper target that far since steel just tells you that you hit it, not where you hit it.  This is the first paper target I've shot at 200yds and I was impressed with the rifle and how she did through a mag.  The shot below the left 8 was the first shot, a little holdover and she did great with the rest.  The four headshots were for sighting in on the grid target.

Paint it, I always give it a fresh coat, maybe a dot or cross-hair in a contrasting color so I can get a feel for group size and the satisfaction of the smack on the steel:thumbup:

Not long, about 10 rounds and it gets hard to be sure of the impact location. I tried the sticky targets but couldn't get past a few rounds at most. A tip on paint, get primer, it has more solids so it covers better with less.

Seems like guys usually use white or light gray, I assume because when you bang it the darker steel shows
