The friend that got me into the 358 Win stuff, well he likes shooting the big calibers....for him 45/70 is a good starting point.....50/70, 50/90, and some more that I cannot recall...African calibers are what he likes to plink with.

But that is a whole other thread topic......

Sweet dear little cute Baby Jesus...  You're loading 50-70?  That has to be a crazy round.

Damn, man.  :hail:

with out going and looking at the gun I believe it is an 1871 rem rolling block carbine. I cast bullets for it and went elk hunting, didn't get a shot with it but the following year I killed a spike with the trapdoor 45/70

50/70, 50/90 , Is that what Quigley down under shot in the Winchester 1886?  I saw the rifle Billy Dixon shot the Indian Chief with at Adobe Walls. I think it was a Sharps. Been many years ago, maybe about 1965 that I saw it in a gun shop in Pampa.

besides the rem rolling block I also have a sharps carbine. during the war (civil) it fired a .52 caliber 450 gr. bullet and used a linen cartridge and percussion cap. after the war the sharps company converted 31,098 of these carbines to 50/70 centerfire cartridge. most of these guns were sent west to be used by cavalry in the indian wars in the 1870's. mine is one of these.  some found their way to the franco-prussion war.

Well now, just finished up a couple hundred 308 gravel pit specials... Mixed headstamp multi times fired brass ran through a small base die that I shortened up a few extra thousands, 150 gr fmj over 42.4 gr AR Comp loaded on the Dillon 650 progressive. Definitely not loaded to be tack drivers but fast and  cheap  and don't care if I recover the cases.

What I load,  using a Dillon 650 progressive with a power trimmer set up, case feeder with pistol, small and large rifle plates, plus 2 Rockchuckers.

Circa 1929 '95 Winchester. Still a regular shooter. Sends 300 gr Hornady's uprange at over 2000 fps with SD's in the single digits. Punishes on both ends.

I've posted these before but you got me stirred up, pretty proud of this shooter.

All the old mixed brass ran awesome except some S&B, primers seemed to seat a little bit high, not so high I would notice but the bolt noticed when it almost rotated all the way into battery but instead jammed tight on a couple. Only way to tell the difference was to put them in a case gauge and use a straight edge. Culled out about 10-15, all S&B.

Anyway, some data comparing progressive weighed loads in mixed 3 times + fired brass vs single headstamp low use hand trickled loads.

Progressive press weighed loads, worn mixed brass, 42.4 AR-Comp Fed primers 150 gr  FMJ BT 12.5" barrel

Single headstamp (Starline) 1 or 2 times fired max,  trickled loads 42.4 AR-Comp Fed primers 150 gr Hornady SST, 12.5" barrel

Screenshot_20200229-173112_LabRadar.thumb.jpg.baeac8edf2b383291b1a1b73ba64f4b8.jpg

Red dot optics, couldn't tell the difference at 100 yard accuracy wise, budget loads perfect for the gravel pit.

Barrel length data: 12.5" Sig  barrel 150 SSTs 230 FPS +/- slower then the 150 SSTs out of the Anderson 18" barrel
