ApexJunky
I’ll have this home later today. Let the games begin. I’m going to just assume it will have the wrong buffer and possibly too small of a gas port.

ApexJunky
Factory gun with 5 rounds through it. Got it from a friend and he claimed it cycled properly. Initial inspection showed no wear marks and the bolt locks back in the appropriate position. That’s a good first sign. Came with 100 rounds of cheap ammo and I’ll report back after we get better acquainted. Came with two magazines. The Magpul mag drops free when ejected but the Hexmag version has to be pulled from the mag well. ApexJunky
Took her out today to get acquainted. It was humid, very cloudy, very windy and with ambient temps in the upper 60’s. We started to get the new scope dialed in and got to work at 25 yards. Had a few failure to feed issues and that’s likely attributable to the fact the gun was DRY! I have been so busy with my racecar, and work, that I didn’t even think to lube this baby properly. The range master had some Rem Oil and that at least kept the fun going. We pushed to 100 yards after about 6 rounds and kept working on the scope. I’m not a big fan of the “HexMag” but only because it doesn’t fall free when ejected. They also feel cheap compared to the PMAG. This is just my opinion. Today, I was shooting some ZQ1 146 gr and then Sig Sauer 168 gr once the scope was a bit more dialed in. I haven’t measured it yet but this was the final, 3 shot group at 100 yards. Not bad for a dry rifle, on a windy day and shooting off a bag. The previous group was comparable to this and I decided it was time to stop. Tonight, I am going to properly lube the rifle with Lubriplate FMO-AW oil and SFL-0 grease. I may go back to the range tomorrow and see how the gun reacts to it. ✌🏻 I’m going to shoot the gun a bit more in its current form before I change anything. Here are initial thoughts of the M5E1: 1. It shoots decent and doesn’t feel grossly overgassed like the PA10 I previously had. 2. Recoil was manageable but I feel it may benefit some tuning. 3. Shells ejected about 4 o’clock and about waist high. 4. There were no extraction issues. 5. The USGI type trigger is gritty and feels like you’d expect. shooterrex
A muzzle brake in place of the flash hider will help w/the recoil.

ApexJunky
Lubed the rifle up nicely and I’m headed back to the range tomorrow. Decided to try the “heavy buffers” spring I had laying around from my PA10 build but I’m bringing the factory spring to compare. I haven’t made any other changes to the rifle aside from that. My wife had decided to tag along and I’m towing additional weaponry (not pictured) along for the trip. This should be fun…right?

I’m using a M14.ca CASM scope mount and it also has their “trigger shoe”.
Cunuckgaucho
Just now, ApexJunky said: That is a M1A Standard parked in a Sage Int’l M14ALSC chassis (semi M39 EMR clone) with a Nightforce SHV 4-14x56 scope. Unfortunately the job that is sponsering this project is also taking valuable time away from such important endeavors

ApexJunky
Had a good outing overall but didn’t spend the quality time with it that I had hoped. There were no feed issues this round and the “heavy buffers” spring seemed to slow the action only marginally. Did have one instance of it not locking back on the last round so I’ll check the length compared to the Aero spring. My wife has a good time and worked her red dot in nicely, so, anything at 25 yards has no chance. The star of the outing was my M1A and it was punching one large hole at 100 yards using cheap, 150 gr ammo. For some reason I didn’t take pictures of it but it’s a gem. I’ll upload target pictures later on or tomorrow.
HotRod308
So the M1A out shot the new M5E rifle? My M1A out shoots my LR308 as well. I called the one shot at 4 as a poor shot.

ApexJunky
Decided to tame some of the recoil by switching the buffer spring to a SpringCo orange and KAK LR308 heavy buffer. I do intend on switching to a muzzle brake/KeyMo mount for a suppressor. I have a DeadAir Nomad L and a Energetic Arms Vox S in NFA prison to play with eventually. The M5E1’s buffer weighed in at 3.8 oz.
ApexJunky
I’m also open to suggestions for a better scope mount. I do not have faith in this Aero Precision unit and I’m leaning towards a LaRue LT-111.
