What to spend my money on...

I'm itching to buy a handgun.... question is what to get....

9mm or .45ACP?  (what ammo is easier to find when/if poop hits the fan)

Budget: $600ish or less...

Since conceal carry is not on the top of my requirements I've been looking at the following:

Sig P250 FS - 9mm (just got a hands-on feel with one at Bass Pro... the trigger pull is like a mile long!! Feels really weird.)

XDm-9 5.25 comp series

XDm-9 FS

S&W M&P9 Pro Series 5"

S&W M&P9 Pro Series CORE 5"

and of course....1911s...

Auto Ordnance 1911

STI Spartan V

Citadel 1911 (I've heard that this one is not that reliable)

I'd rather pick up something that's made in the USA - that's keeping me from buying an XD.. or Glock for that matter.

Anyway, I'm open to suggestions and recommendations

:D

Thoughts?

Shibiwan STI for sure the spartan's frame isnt USA but the rest of the gun is I think. We have an elektra and an escort from them in 9mm

Now just take the 6 bills and add bout another 8 bills for an STI thats built like a fine watch and everything is Texas built...check out the 1911 forum for the reviews on different models/makes of 1911 style handguns

I need to eventually get a .40cal. I have over 3k sitting in my garage from surplus range ammo.

HEY BUDDY!!!!!!!

.45 has been a lot more common thru out the past 9 months then 9mm. I like the two XD pistols I own and for the most part I really haven't heard anything bad about them

Thanks for the info... I think I'm in the wrong biz and should be making 1911's instead of aftermarket auto parts.:D

...and so the discussion ends with me ending up poorer.

9mm is HELL to find right now.  And it'll probably be HELL to find if this stuff ever happens again.

I'm just sayin'...

BTW, Found tons of cheap 9mm (brass, not steel) in town. :D

You can't leave me hangin like that - where's it at?!...

I have 10 UZI mags to keep loaded up.

LOL... the LGS i stumbled into had a ton of Wasp Industries (www.waspfirearms.com - based in Mesa, AZ) ammo on hand. They are 115gr reloads/remanufactured with CBC brass that looks to be in good shape. At $36/100 I figure I'd chance it and support a local company. :D

Was hoping to test them out at the range this weekend but I'm stuck till my father-in-law leaves on Monday.... :(

  • 2 weeks later...

.45 have been relatively easy to find during the panic whereas 9mm hasn't.

I'm happy with my FNP-45 Tactical and carrying 15+1 on a .45 is a definite plus. The tactical is north of your price range but I see regular FNX's going for $600 all the time.

One hidden cost of guns that people tend to forget are magazines and FN mags are never cheap. They currently go for $40~ and during the panic they were as much as $100+.
