Welcome to the forums Gary! Thanks for your military service, I've always been intrigued by the stories of Vietnam heli veterans ever since I read a book called "Apache Sunrise", I'll bet you have a few hair raisers yourself. Enjoy your time here, we're glad to have you. -
He's incredibly fast. I love watching his trigger manipulation, he squeezes off each shot and then takes a nap (with his eyes open) while the recoil cycle completes. He's probably got the fastest trigger reset muscle memory of any shooter on record.

I have done exactly that, and it was very rewarding. Roughly 3K later, it still dominates the range, and everyone who knows ARs moseys to my firing position to drool on it while the range is cold.

Welcome to the forums RadioGuy! There's a veritable smorgasborg of calibers that have successfully operated off the 1911 platform, if that's what you like, find one that suits your ballistic needs and see whether or not it's right for you.

I shot Winchester commercial soft points through a LR-308 with the factory DPMS mags, and it was iffy at best. Can't speak to other mag/rifle combos.
