But it's totally ok to call any piece of crap rifle you build in 5.56/.223 an AR-15 !?!?

Yes...because that's what it is. AR10 is not a type or style of firearm, its a specific brand model. Its not compatible with the majority of 308AR type rifles. As an example of why we harp on this:

A member was recently troubleshooting a build. He didn't know that there is a difference between AR10 gas tubes and AR15/LR308 gas tubes. He had a standard tube and needed an AR10 tube....so he went out and bought an AR10 tube....that was the same as the tube he already had because even shops and gunsmiths can't seem to understand that the AR10 is not a generic term for 308 AR rifles. It is a specific rifle.

Just like the AR-10, the AR 15 was a Stoner design which Armalite then liscensed to Colt. Wiki differentiates between the Armalite AR-15, Colt CAR-15 and calls the others "AR platform" rifles.

Yes, AR-15 platform is more standardized (milspec) than AR-10 /308 AR platform rifles, but that's mainly the manufactures' faults.

Here's a better history on it:

Bottom line is easy - Colt trademarked the name, after the patents expired.  Colt hasn't raised as much hell about the "AR-15" term use in the weapon system's designation.  If they'd try it now, they'd have a very hard time going after every manufacturer, based on a term that's become common-use (that they allowed to become a common-use term).

Shiit, they don't even hold the M-16 base contract with the military anymore...

So, to answer your original question - yes, it's totally ok to call any piece of crap rifle you build in 5.56/.223 an AR-15.

To get into that discussion, you'd need to understand the M-16/M4 TDP.

There is no TDP on the large-frame ARs.  If anything was ever close to it, it would've been the KAC SR-25 and variants.

:laffs: And a new record for pissing everyone on the Forum off! Some people just have "The Gift". Also, what's a boollit?

That is how the members over at castboolits.gunloads.com describe their lead bullets.

Just a way of differentiating their cast from jacketed. ..which are colloquially called J-words......
