Cliff R
So I fall asleep in my recliner night before last and get woke up by the dogs going ape-chit at the back door. I grab my M & P 9mm and a head lamp and follow them outside. The chickens are going nuts and I catch some bright eyes in my light as we all head that direction. A big bore Coon runs up a Maple tree and climbs to the top. I shot him out with the M & P which proved to be a little tricky as it was difficult to find him in the light and use the sights. After missing a couple of times he worked his way clear to the top of the tree but made the mistake of looking down and I zeroed in on his bright eyes and out he comes but full of piss and vinegar. The two older dogs abandoned me as neither one likes shooting all that much, but my new pup was right there and dove in with all four feet. She got nipped once but that just made her more determined to finish him off, which she did in short order. After the ordeal I decided there has to be a better way, so I rigged up a light on my most accurate 22 rifle. Next time I'll be better prepared. I did some test shooting and the cross hairs are dead in the center of the beam so I should be good to go. Sort of a crude rig but ready for business. Sadie got an extra treat when we got back to the house and plenty of lovin from the grandkids. She's only 9 months old and has some pretty big shoes to fill after loosing two of my Min Pins late last year. I couldn't be more proud of here, she's going to be a good one for sure........Cliff Edited April 7, 2020 by Cliff R

Cliff R
I forgot to grab my cell phone to shoot some pics of the fight and aftermath. It was over pretty quickly as the 9mm pretty much did the Racoon in, he had just enough fight left in him to be good training for my new pup. The two females I lost last year were killing machines, especially Samantha (the one with the groundhog in the pic). For the most part if it moved it died. She would pile young groundhogs up here in the Spring like cordwood, and never had a mouse get away if we lifting up boards or metal siding around the old barn on our property. Best squirrel dog I ever had too, and when she was younger ran down a few rabbits and killed piles of ground squirrels. My surviving female Sophia is mostly a housedog, never took much to hunting and killing like her mom and sister did. Sadie is working out better than expected. You just never know with these things. Dogs are like people, good ones, bad ones, and a bunch in the middle someplace.......

Sharpshooter
I may have said this earlier (I was drinking then) (hell, I'm drinking now!) but when I came back from triple bypass surgery (and I was hurting pretty good) I laid down in the recliner and my cat crawled up on my chest, stretched himself out on my incision, and purred to me. Pain gone, all was well in the world, and that cat was golden from then on. Fact is, he was pretty golden before that. Good pets rock! TactiCat made me proud again last Saturday afternoon, when he got another dog. It was impressive. That's another long story of itself, but he did himself proud. Afterwards, he came in, and purred his ass off. Content.

Cliff R
Hank reminds me of Tom, a rescue cat I had here about 10 years ago. Tom was really cool and took long walks with us daily. Sadly the neighbor shot him one day when he crossed the fence into his pasture field.....I almost went to jail over that one!.......

RedRiverII
Love all my dogs, past and present. I remember your sad story but am glad to see new blood. Cali at 5 months, nice ! If there was ever a product that deserved the prefix "Tactical ", it'd be duct tape.

I would go to jail, I’d burn a Mf’rs house down! My biggest fear is her getting outside, she never leaves the yard but still worries me. I really don’t like outside cats but not that much... Sharpshooter
I'm with you, brother. Unless my cat has been killing their critters, that's a bad move on their part. Now, if my cat has been killing their critters, me and the cat may have to have a conversation. As an aside, I had a tomcat that was half Siamese and half Wildcat (no, not feral cat ... a long-eared fukking Wildcat). He loved every human he ever met but hated every animal he ever saw. We lived next door to an auctioneer who had a jackass and two horses in the four acres behind his house. I watched my cat go over to that field, get up behind a horse, then claw him on the hocks. The horse kicked, the cat rolled under the kick (clawing as the hoof passed over him), then was up on his feet and clawing the horse again. Remember, we're talking about a 27 pound (yes, he was a big cat) tomcat versus a 1200 pound horse. No fukking contest. The horse ran away, and that damn cat chased after him, swatting him left and right, herding him all over that field. Mean little fukker, he was! But he loved people. I have no idea where he got that particular character flaw.
Cliff R
The neighbor that shot my cat died suddenly about two weeks later......... His property adjoined mine on the West. I went to his children when they had an Estate sale shortly after his death and offered to buy the land.....they said they would never sell it and one of the kids was going to move into the house and pay the rest of them rent, blah, blah, blah...... A week later I owned it.........Karma maybe?

Cliff R
The chickens get locked up at night (free range) but sometimes I fall asleep in my recliner in the evenings and don't get out there till 9-10pm or so. Of course these two were in the pen eating the chicken food, but they like chicken better so sooner or later they will kill some hens for a better tasting meal. I don't just arbitrarily kill animals, they like to live too, but with some of these predators we are left with no choice. They scurried up a big Maple tree beside the coup but it wasn't tall enough to get them out of the reach of my rifle........

I miss the days when women liked real fur, the varmint population stayed down, I had fun and made some money, and the animal served a purpose after death.
