Is the 'open carry' movement going too far?

Recommended Posts

All NRA staff derive their income from members.

They are going to carefully navigate the anti gun minefield to protect that income.

They will derive no income by selling their members out.

Anti gunners will not offer them a job.

I believe some critics attempt to paint simple solutions onto very complicated situations.

I'd imagine being on the inside is a very hot spot for sure.

Yes you can...............get an AMEN.

I think they were trying to appeal to a larger crowd.  If you think we can continue to stave off the anti-2A crowd without an increase in membership and support, then you are incorrect.

True, true, true.  Very true.

This is exactly what they're doing now with the NRA News Commentators.  They have brought that on to reach new generations, new people, older people - it's just another avenue to reach MORE people.  Colion, Dom, and Natalie Foster were the first ones, but there's alot of them now.

And it's working.

EDIT:  Since I brought it up, here's another excellent one...

This is terrible for us. This is the kind of stuff that sets us back, because one idiot thinks he is exercising his rights. Causing a tense situation, even before law enforcements' presence, is going in the wrong direction. Does anyone really believe by going out, raising a raucous, and claiming it's your right , that you are really advancing public opinion on the positive aspects of open carry? How about quietly carrying your pistol open, not drawing attention to yourself, and go about your business.

I applaud the officers on scene for the way they handled the situation.

^^^this contact with law enforcement could have become far worse, really fast. This contact with the left-wing press went straight into the toilet, though even worse than what could have been predicted.

Although, friend edgecrusher, some of what you say is what the NRA said about open carry of rifles, before Open Carry Texas threatened to withdraw its support of the NRA, and the NRA backed away.

This is not an easy or simple issue, and deserves careful watching. With all this open carry of rifles going on, there's bound to be one event that winds up with the US Supreme Court. The case that makes it there could be righteous, or bad enough that we'll regret it for a century.

The NRA being wishy-washy on rifle open carry helps nobody. They need to come out with a statement on open carry that's viable and workable, and publish something on open carry etiquette that law enforcement can live with.

An armed society is a polite society, and -- we gotta admit -- we, the armed, need to show that we are polite.

I'm sorry. Other than a hunter with orange gear heading into or out of the woods is the only case that will survive a trial. It's hard to justify the average citizen (a standard measuring stick) needing to open carry a rifle. That doesn't mean everyone in every situation.

Take for example:

A person legally carrying a rifle slung on their back while hiking in an area near our southern border. Totally justified, for safety.

Someone goes to a shopping mall, rifle slung in a single point in front, ranting and raving about.... (You can pick the topic, it doesn't matter, I can say there isn't a reason here that can be beneficial)

I agree that there is a body of people taking the open carried rifle thing in the wrong direction, and it will only be played in the direction the media wants, but the bottom line is the average citizen doesnt need a reason to carry a rifle in the open to do so, whether it has a wood stock and he is out in the woods, or whether he is at McDonald's.

If we degrade our own rights on this issue, it will degrade our rights on other issues, and we may need the right to carry our rifles in the future.

There is no need to exercise a right. Carrying a rifle is protected by the first, as well as second amendment. If we look down on these people for carrying their rifles, and if we say they dont "need" to carry their rifles, the left will come right back at us and say that we dont "need" to carry our pistols either. But the bottom line is that this is not about "need". The word "need" is way over used anyways.

I dont "need" to live away from my parents, or my in laws. I dont "need" decent clothing. I dont "need" more than one meal a day. But this is America.

So what to do about some wankers walking around looking like... wankers and giving us a bad name? It might be hard, but as gun owners on a whole, I think we need to step up and support them, while guiding the ones we can to more beneficial protests or actions.

There will ALWAYS be Morons with guns. That is what the left is so petrified of. We as gun owners, and humans with some level of cognizant ability, need to minimize the negative image of firearms, and instil education and respect for firearms. But it is our duty, even in difficult circumstances, to never attempt to strip another law abiding citizen of their firearms rights.

I mean, if we were to do that, think of all the other freedoms we could loose... we could be forced to wear seatbelts, helmets, we could be forced to buy health insurance, or we could be forced off of public land, or worse, our own land... wait a second...

I think it boils down to "What people see is what they know."

Media innundates us with imagery of military and SWAT using single-point slings, hand on the pistol grip and ready for action...much less so are those images of soldiers/LE carrying rifles slung and being ported on the individuals back.

These "it's my right" asshats carrying with single-point slings are asking for a confrontation.

That being said (get your "But they need to do it that way" retort ready), nobody bats an eye when rifles are carried slung over someone's back in Switzerland or Israel.

In my opinion we are coming to a time when our best option will be to have our rifle on our person at all times.

I personally cant stand one point slings... I have met very few infantrymen besides myself who used one, and for good reason... if your moving more than a couple of k... they are uncomfortable.

Yes, looking menacing isn't polite. But our butthurt politically correct society needs to grow up. They state they have the right not to be "intimidated", but our first amendment (contrary to the leftist beliefs) does not only apply until someone is offended, intimidated, or scared...

It is sad that our nation is pushing an agenda that involves us sissifying our children. The left doesnt want men in this nation, that would be contrary to their agenda.

Yep. I'm back to the standard MGD. But Rene and I were doing some serious damage to the Yuengling supply while in a certain New England State (of intoxication). That, and those blackish, brownish, blueish looking shots (that I still have no fuckin idea what was in em) that the bartender was feeding us at the hotel. And yeah......she was a biker too. <laughs>

Race-Baiting Open Carry Advocates to March through 5th Ward in Houston Juneteenth Weekend - Burnt Orange Report - June 19, 2014
http://www.burntorangereport.com/diary/15344/racebaiting-open-carry-advocates-to-march-through-5th-ward-in-houston

[excerpt]

In what they say is an effort to "show that gun rights belong to all" members of the open carry movement will walk through the 5th Ward on Sunday -- a day after many Texans will be celebrating Juneteenth, in a predominantly African American area of Houston settled by former slaves just after the Civil War.
