jtallen83 Posted December 3, 2014 Report Posted December 3, 2014 yep and you do not need a whole lot of different bullets 130's do it all end of story... and ammo is cheap.. Wish I had the willpower to stick with just what I needed and and not get what I want...........but then I would have been done buying weapons while still a teenager.
Magwa Posted December 4, 2014 Report Posted December 4, 2014 certain things are just plain good enough my 270 is the only bolt gun I own now.... it just works I would not be afraid to shoot anything in North America including a charging grizzlycause he is going to get 130 grains of pure barnes copper right in the noggin....
Tripledeuce Posted December 4, 2014 Report Posted December 4, 2014 I'v got a number of different guns in the safe. Everything from the 22 hornet to the 458 Win Mag. Semi's, bolts. single shots. If I had to get rid of everything, but ONE gun, that gun would be my Browning M1885single shot, that I re-barrlled to 7X57 mauser. With 160 grain old style noslers, it will take anything on earth, even elepanant. Respectfully Terry
planeflyer21 Posted December 4, 2014 Report Posted December 4, 2014 M1918 Browning Automatic Rifle :hethan: :auto: :hethan: Not available in .270.
survivalshop Posted December 4, 2014 Report Posted December 4, 2014 I bought an select fire , FNHB ,instead of the BAR & wish I would have bought the BAR instead , but man was the FNHB fun . Of course that was when a case of 7.62x51 was only eighty bucks . <dontknow> Love the BAR <thumbsup>
Rsquared Posted December 5, 2014 Report Posted December 5, 2014 Who couldn't love slingin some 30-06 down range in full auto? They always produce that grin on your face, just like the one the LT had when he was finished.
Robocop1051 Posted December 5, 2014 Report Posted December 5, 2014 If you get the .270, in a year you'll be wanting a .257 or .25-06...
Tripledeuce Posted December 5, 2014 Report Posted December 5, 2014 If you get the .270, in a year you'll be wanting a .257 or .25-06... or a 30-06!
Robocop1051 Posted December 6, 2014 Report Posted December 6, 2014 I want a .204 for absolutely no better reason than "just because...".
unforgiven Posted December 6, 2014 Report Posted December 6, 2014 I been stockin up on 30-06 for the Garand from Creedmore.Match grade 167gr. Secnar BTHP ,2,720 fps.Use's Lapua brass.I order when they run free ship. They are going to have match ammo in .223.They have match in .308 now.
Sharkey Posted December 6, 2014 Author Report Posted December 6, 2014 2 choices - .270 or 30 06, all other things, rifle, optics, conditions, all the same. You have 1 minute to drop down and hit 5 cantaloupe sized targets at ranges from 500 to 800 yards. Which round would you choose of the 2?
survivalshop Posted December 7, 2014 Report Posted December 7, 2014 Wouldn't matter which . Unless you wanted to penetrate a hardened surface , then the availability of an excellent 30'06 AP round would shine .
unforgiven Posted December 8, 2014 Report Posted December 8, 2014 I have seen AP 30-06 ,ain't cheap but there is no stopping that round.http://www.ammogarand.com/3006ammo.html
Sharkey Posted December 8, 2014 Author Report Posted December 8, 2014 lol... Not gonna be going the AP route on anything anytime soon. So for pinpoint, repeatable accuracy at distances, you don't see any advantage of the 270 over the 06? Granted, I lean toward the 06 just due to the fact that I haven't bought anything under 30 cal for a lot of years but from everything I've been reading lately, the 270 may have a slight edge when it comes to accuracy. Smaller round aside, of the 2, when it comes to pinpoint accuracy, are we still picking the 06 over the 270?
BLKSHEEP Posted December 8, 2014 Report Posted December 8, 2014 What happens at 800 yards may be a different story....
planeflyer21 Posted December 8, 2014 Report Posted December 8, 2014 I'd choose .30-06 but with bullets heavier than 150gr. Push up to the 220gr and you have a better BC and more mass inertia.
survivalshop Posted December 9, 2014 Report Posted December 9, 2014 The Heavy bullets will make a difference at longer range . <munch>

98Z5V Posted December 9, 2014 Report Posted December 9, 2014 The difference is that the .270 is dropping 43.3" and the 30-06 is dropping 54" That's just for those two specific projectiles/loads, at that specific distance. There's so much variable data, that it really doesn't matter which one is chosen.
Sharkey Posted December 9, 2014 Author Report Posted December 9, 2014 FYI - I never asked "which one is best". I asked which people would choose and why? Simple show of hands and comments. Not everyone in the shooting game is a complete know-it-all so some of us ask questions. I've seen the ballistics and done the research and numbers are nice and all but opinions of people that have experience with these calibers are irreplaceable so questions of this nature should not only be appropriate, but the actual REASON for having forums. What cracks me up is misquotes and people half reading and then making inappropriate comments... That's always good for some laughs.
