Ayuda me! Need help with a chamber issue

DNP

Recommended Posts

A relative gave my dad a rifle to check out. It's a Venezuelan Mauser but we have no idea what it's chambered for. Best info they could find online lead us to believe it was 7.92x57 or 8mm Mauser...which doesn't drop in. Another recommended .308.....no dice. My research said 7x57 and we haven't tried that yet.

Question is....how the hell do you measure a chamber on an unknown barrel?  There's got to be a way to do it.

Pretty Cool! A quick search came up with this: http://www.milsurps.com/showthread.php?t=32088

Also I agree that it's likely 7mm x 57mm

I agree ...did a search , found one chambered in 7mmx57mm ,less than 600 serial numbers away from yours.

Found one serial number  les than 300 away.

My dad picked up some 7x57 today. Should hear in the morning if it fit. He was planning to test fire it tonight too if he got the nod from the owner. It belongs to my aunt's husband.  (I'd say uncle, but this is husband number xx...how many uncles can one aunt produce??)((nice guy, like him a lot though)).  This rifle belonged to his dad and he wound up with it when his dad passed. He knew nothing about it, but wants to shoot it a little before it gets locked up again for a while. I don't think he's much into guns or shooting, but now he has one with a little sentimental value at least. Keep you posted. Thanks again for the replies.

Nice rifle!

Test firing, without taking a chamber cast, and slugging the bbl is BEGGING  for a problem!

At the very least, take a led slug(oversize) and run it down the bbl and measure it.  If it measures .284 plus  or minus a couple of thou.  it almost certanly a 7

x57.  99.999 % probabilty.   Also tie the rifle to your spare tire, and use a LONG string to pull  the trigger, the first time.

I lost my sense of adventure when a rifle I was test firing for a customer blew up.  i mean, bbl split from reciever to halfway up the bbl, reciever split like a pistacio. stockl blown to pieces. It was a WWII 98 mauser, marked BYF, (mauser factory code)  late war mfg.  Headspace perfectly, and a .323  bore.  Used factory Win 8mm mauser ammo.

Have you tried it out yet?  If not, I'd get some headspace gauges at the least just to make sure it's g2g.  I had a buddy of mine come over a while ago with what I believe was a 7mm Mauser.  I never got a chance to check, because he just swore that it was chambered in .30-30 no matter how much I tried to tell him.  So he went ahead and tried it anyways.  He ended up with shrapnel in his forehead, 3 pieces of what used to be a really nice Mauser, and a new outlook on life.  Oh, and he never came over to shoot again.
