DNP Posted December 10, 2015 Report Posted December 10, 2015 A relative gave my dad a rifle to check out. It's a Venezuelan Mauser but we have no idea what it's chambered for. Best info they could find online lead us to believe it was 7.92x57 or 8mm Mauser...which doesn't drop in. Another recommended .308.....no dice. My research said 7x57 and we haven't tried that yet. Question is....how the hell do you measure a chamber on an unknown barrel? There's got to be a way to do it.
Toolndie7 Posted December 10, 2015 Report Posted December 10, 2015 I've heard of pouring molten material in a plugged barrel and making a cast of the chamber, then remove and measure.....
guruofhotrod Posted December 10, 2015 Report Posted December 10, 2015 Pretty Cool! A quick search came up with this: http://www.milsurps.com/showthread.php?t=32088Also I agree that it's likely 7mm x 57mm
jtallen83 Posted December 10, 2015 Report Posted December 10, 2015 Brownell's has a specific material for making a chamber cast with a known shrinkage rate. Directions are included.

planeflyer21 Posted December 10, 2015 Report Posted December 10, 2015 Brownell's has a specific material for making a chamber cast with a known shrinkage rate. Directions are included. The only safe way to do it too, IMO.Check Brownell's for Cerrosafe.
MikedaddyH Posted December 10, 2015 Report Posted December 10, 2015 Get a round of 7mm x 57mm and slip in ... Cerrosafe process is a little bit of a PITA but a last resort failsafe.
DNP Posted December 10, 2015 Author Report Posted December 10, 2015 Awesome. Thank you gents. We were guessing there would be something you could cast to measure. I also agree with it being the safest way.
blue109 Posted December 10, 2015 Report Posted December 10, 2015 You know you have kids when you say "ayuda me!!!" In your head in Dora the explorers voice.

sketch Posted December 11, 2015 Report Posted December 11, 2015 Lerned somthing new today! Hell of a cool looking find.
DNP Posted December 11, 2015 Author Report Posted December 11, 2015 My dad picked up some 7x57 today. Should hear in the morning if it fit. He was planning to test fire it tonight too if he got the nod from the owner. It belongs to my aunt's husband. (I'd say uncle, but this is husband number xx...how many uncles can one aunt produce??)((nice guy, like him a lot though)). This rifle belonged to his dad and he wound up with it when his dad passed. He knew nothing about it, but wants to shoot it a little before it gets locked up again for a while. I don't think he's much into guns or shooting, but now he has one with a little sentimental value at least. Keep you posted. Thanks again for the replies.

Must be a California thing, I've never heard that here in New Mexico and I'm around high schoolers from both sides of the border almost every day.
planeflyer21 Posted December 12, 2015 Report Posted December 12, 2015 Here more professional sorts would say "Ayuda me por favor!", while the spanglishers would say "Helpo!"
Rsquared Posted December 12, 2015 Report Posted December 12, 2015 while the spanglishers would say "Helpo!"Wasn't that one of the Marx brothers?
Tripledeuce Posted December 12, 2015 Report Posted December 12, 2015 (edited) Nice rifle! Test firing, without taking a chamber cast, and slugging the bbl is BEGGING for a problem! At the very least, take a led slug(oversize) and run it down the bbl and measure it. If it measures .284 plus or minus a couple of thou. it almost certanly a 7x57. 99.999 % probabilty. Also tie the rifle to your spare tire, and use a LONG string to pull the trigger, the first time. Respectfully Terry Edited December 12, 2015 by Tripledeuce add stuff
unforgiven Posted December 12, 2015 Report Posted December 12, 2015 Wasn't that one of the Marx brothers? BWAAAHAHAHAHAHA Why yes,yes it was...LMFAO.
DNP Posted December 12, 2015 Author Report Posted December 12, 2015 Where's your sense of adventure? Hold my beer, watch this.... 7x57 is it. Fits real nice. Strips out fine. We marked the bullet and case and checked points of contact. Firing on Monday.
mrmackc Posted December 12, 2015 Report Posted December 12, 2015 Wasn't that one of the Marx brothers? NO that would have been HARPO!
Tripledeuce Posted December 13, 2015 Report Posted December 13, 2015 I lost my sense of adventure when a rifle I was test firing for a customer blew up. i mean, bbl split from reciever to halfway up the bbl, reciever split like a pistacio. stockl blown to pieces. It was a WWII 98 mauser, marked BYF, (mauser factory code) late war mfg. Headspace perfectly, and a .323 bore. Used factory Win 8mm mauser ammo. Respectfuly Terry
DNP Posted December 13, 2015 Author Report Posted December 13, 2015 Gotta go and rain on the parade with a story like that. Damn it Terry....knock it off with the wisdom and good ideas.
ChaseFan9 Posted January 31, 2016 Report Posted January 31, 2016 Have you tried it out yet? If not, I'd get some headspace gauges at the least just to make sure it's g2g. I had a buddy of mine come over a while ago with what I believe was a 7mm Mauser. I never got a chance to check, because he just swore that it was chambered in .30-30 no matter how much I tried to tell him. So he went ahead and tried it anyways. He ended up with shrapnel in his forehead, 3 pieces of what used to be a really nice Mauser, and a new outlook on life. Oh, and he never came over to shoot again.
DNP Posted January 31, 2016 Author Report Posted January 31, 2016 7x57 was the correct ammo. It has been fired. Couldn't talk em into casting the chamber. Thought it would be a fun project to try out.
