98Z5V
Had to get my a#s out and shoot. It's been driving me buggy. Today I got Kim and the youngest boy out for some range time. I've been NEEDING to shoot the Win Mag, and wanted to shoot the Grendel - and Kim still needed to zero her 5.56 coyote gun for her... I wanted a 300-yard zero on the Win Mag, so we set out paper zero targets at 100, steel at 200 and 300. At 25 yards, we hung a 10-in gong and 12-in gong for the boy. He was on the Savage FV-SR today. Here's Kim, all set up after we got the steel out: The boy, Ephram, didn't piss about, either. He got the shooting mat out, set out the shooting block, and started smashing steel right away. Had to get some help with the foamy ear plugs... I just took this pic because. The adult's shooting table: ^^^ That rifle has been driving me crazy. I've had it since the week after the Fall Shoot. It just got out today, for it's maiden voyage... Here's Kim, gettin' after her zero target. Here's the layout for us - 100 zero targets, 200 steel to the right of them, 300 steel to the left of them. I already got the Win Mag zero'd at 100, and there's marks on that 200 and 300 in this pic. I dialed up the mils for the 100-to-200, and put one round on the 200. You can tell which impact is the 300 Win Mag. When I saw that, I moved right to the 300. This one, I just held upper-centermass. I wanted to zero here, so I was going to be making adjustments. First impact was lower left. Adjusted and it went lower right (I went too far). Adjusted back half of that, and got center bottom. Moved up from there and comfirmed - this is where the zero is staying. Ephram was actually putting dings in the 200 - I made him pose it up for a hero shot - he has NO IDEA how easy it ISN'T to hit 200 with a 22LR gun... This little punk actually made a hit on steel on the 300!!! Kim got on the Win Mag before we left. At first, she said she'd only shoot one round. I told her it was WAY better on recoil than the damn 45-70. I loaded 3 into it before she shot. Good thing, too - she connected with the 200 right away, and moved immediately to the 300 for the next two hits. Overall, GREAT day in the dirt. The Grendel - well, that thing just isn't going to run without some dedicated magazines. I tried 3 rounds in a Lancer mag - still wouldn't keep feeding. It'll only load the top round from a 5.56 mag, and not even two. I was loading one round at a time, but that just sucks from trying to zero a scope - it went back in the bag. Ironically, I've got three E-Lander mags showing up for it tomorrow... Just my timing. It's day will come, and that'll be soon. Go put some firing pin to primer, men. edgecrusher
Once it gets above freezing I will. Until then I’ll stay warm with thoughts of coming back out there
dpete
My Grendel will run 5 rounds perfectly out of 30 round Gen2 Pmags. I've used them in a pinch for load development. Mags are the only pain in the azz with a Grendel.....oh yeah getting brass to reload is a PIA too.
98Z5V
I couldn't get 2 to run from the Lancer 20-rounder. I had some Pmags there, but didn't even try them - I should have. Damnit. I coulda had that thing zero'd now, and be happy about it. I take it you won't have any Grendel range brass showing up in the sale thread... I started with some Hornady Black loaded ammo, so I'll recycle that brass. I'm also just gonna go with new unprimed Hornady brass for this thing, and work up the stockpile. Already have the dies sitting at the bench, and three boxes of projectiles. As soon as I gather up powder, I'll start tinkering with loads for it - after I get it zero'd and the mags show up. Sitting on a box of Hornady 120gr GMX, 123gr ELD-M, and Barnes 120gr TSX. Three 17rd E-Lander mags and two ASC 25rd mags enroute. I'll sort that gun out shortly. Hopefully. 98Z5V
High today was 78, brother - what a weird damn winter. I usually lose the leaves off 4 of my trees out back, when the AZ winter hits. This year, only two of them have a few brown leaves, and everything else is still up there and green. Al Gore pushed all his global warming down here this year. You guys up north sure as hell didn't get any...

Hell ,its gotten down to freezing temps around here at night & only in the upper 50's in the day , well for this week , then back into the 70's by the weekend .? jtallen83
Great times there! I envy the long range ability far more than the weather. Shooting long distance in my area takes lots of work and preparation and only takes a cow deciding to graze in wrong spot to shut it all down. 98Z5V
I will revisit the Grendel tomorrow - it's going back to the desert. I have 3 E-Lander 17rd mags now, and 2 ASC 25rd mags for it. I'll get the data up afterwards. I'll try to get it out to 400 yards on steel. 98Z5V
Got that thing out there - but couldn't get my little truck anywhere near close enough to put in a good distance target. The Chollo cactus were all over and I couldn't get around those little bastards, and I couldn't get the little truck across that wash. So... no 400, no 450. I wanted to walk the damn target out there, but Kim wasn't down with hauling all the shiit on foot. 100 zero target, 200 steel gong, 300 steel IPSC target. DAMN! This 6.5 Grendel is a laser beam. I was shooting towards the bottom of the 300 at one point, because that part of the target was clear. Saw the first one contact on the white-painted steel. Shot again, didn't see it. Hmmm... Shot again, and saw that first splash get a little bigger - Good! I hit two close, and fuckin' missed one. Damnit. After checking the target when we were pulling them at the end of the day - there were 3 rounds in that spot. HOT DAMN! 3 rounds in about an inch, at 300 yards. It was not easy to see at distance, through the scope, but man was I jacked up when I saw it up close. Kim has all the pics, and some Shockwave-on-teller glass video, and I'll get that stuff up tomorrow. Local PD Officer came out with my Gun Pusher, and met us out there. This guy had some CRAZY shotgun ammo! Some stuff called DDUPLEKS, with an expanding slug. I just so happened to have a piece of that teller glass in the back of the truck, maybe the 12" x 18" piece. We put one of those slugs in the Shockwave and blasted that teller glass from about 20 feet - it shattered, and went flying everywhere. There were only a few pieces of it left that were more than 3"x3", and that shiit flew all over. Devastating, completely. Out of curiousity, I put a 230 FMJ .45 round into one of the two remaining larger pieces, and all you could see was a mark where it impacted the glass - not even a crack in it. At this point, Kim fired up the phone video, and I went after the other big piece left, and just blew it to bits. That shotgun ammo was nuts... This is the "low-powered" stuff, right here - the red ones are lower powered than the yellow ones - but both are just nasty. http://www.jgsales.com/12ga-ddupleks-dupo28-steel-expanding-slug,-5rd-box,-1oz-slug,-2.75-shell.-p-4298.html These are the yellow ones, expanded. It was a good day. Edited January 22, 2018 by 98Z5V

Doodle
Latest American Hunter issue has a short test on them. Went thru (8) 1 gallon jugs of water. survivalshop
My TrueBall worked just fine in my smooth bore 12 Ga.. These things look nasty , 8 water jugs , isn't that a little over penetration for Deer ? I have also stoned Big Ohio deer with a Sabot at 158 yards , measured with a Rangefinder , so don't see these imported all that much better then what is out there for Deer sized game , maybe barrier penetration . 392heminut
Damn, looks like fun! I can't get anywhere near a range right now. I'm replacing the engine in my older son's Jeep (has all that computer crap on it of course) because he can't tell a box end wrench from an open end wrench. Been running back and forth to Tucson looking at property to buy and looks like I'm getting 3.4 acres out by Vail, corner lot with paved road on both sides! Also dealing with Camping World of El Paso trying to get those fukkers to get the warranty repairs done on the RV for a trip to Havasu in a couple of weeks and NOW I gotta deal with financing for the Vail property. On top of all that the hospital has about 4 projects they want done yesterday! Fukkit, that stuff will get done when it gets done! Those people pull that schit on me all the time. Fuuk it, maybe I'll go to the range tomorrow. Edited January 24, 2018 by 392heminut
