I remember doing that in school in the hallway during a tornado warning.  What no one mentioned at the time were the 30X30 panes of glass at the top of the wall lining the hallway.  This was pre-AC and the glass panels had about 3 inch gaps between the panes to allow for air circulation when it was hot outside.

A time when we would all face the flag in the room and say the "Pledge of allegiance" everyday. "Air raid drills" that what they were. Chicago had a ring of Nike missiles on the rails, all along the lake. Industry was the target.
