bhyrk Posted February 7, 2014 Report Posted February 7, 2014 I have never built or really dealt with the ar-10. I have a dpms lower and I am looking into starting my new build. Was hoping for some guidance on what type of uppers to look into. Want something higher end and very reliable
FaRKle! Posted February 7, 2014 Report Posted February 7, 2014 Welcome bhyrk! Are you looking for a complete upper or to build one?
bhyrk Posted February 7, 2014 Author Report Posted February 7, 2014 I am looking for a complete upper
unforgiven Posted February 7, 2014 Report Posted February 7, 2014 Welcome from Indiana brother bhyrk.
blopp220 Posted February 8, 2014 Report Posted February 8, 2014 Welcome from NE. I am also a newbie to the 308 world however from my brief experience i have found there isn't as much choice in Ar-10 (Actually Lr-308 in your case) parts especially uppers. This is why I decided to build my own. However, if you can find one I would recommend a fulton armory upper. I have not used one personally, but from all my searching all their product seem to have very good reviews. Otherwise if you really want high quality you could always sell the lower and buy a POF or LMT complete rifle
greenmist Posted February 8, 2014 Report Posted February 8, 2014 Welcome! Your question is needing a budget qualifier: how high end you willing to spend?
survivalshop Posted February 8, 2014 Report Posted February 8, 2014 (edited) I can tell this sight is less brutal than others ,because most places would be chastising you that you don't have an AR 10 & don't ever say you DPMS is one . WE are not like that here & know what you are talking about , but what you need to know as far as parts compatibility , you need to refer to the DPMS/SR25 as far as parts . The DPMS & AR 10 have different receiver configurations & while most internal parts will work , they two have some proprietary parts. Look at these & see if there is a configuration you like. http://blackthorneproducts.com/cart/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=8_29 or http://www.midwayusa.com/find?newcategorydimensionid=18927 Edited February 8, 2014 by survivalshop
EasyEJL Posted February 10, 2014 Report Posted February 10, 2014 Welcome from FL, and yes, you have an LR308, not an AR10 :) which is a positive thing.
washguy Posted February 10, 2014 Report Posted February 10, 2014 If it were me....I would purchase a dpms complete upper to match your dpms lower....so you dont end up with a mismatched rifle...it would be worth a lil more than a frankengun.. :) Wash

And yes there are 3? Different styles. Ar10 is a brand name like kelnex or vise grip, and that brand is armilite. The others are "DPMS"/SR25 style which seems to be most popular and rock river arms kinda has their own thing going if I remember correctly. I think I'd do wash said and go with the same brand upper. I've got a complete lr 308 DPMS and it's a great gun. Oh and welcome from Wisconsin
survivalshop Posted February 10, 2014 Report Posted February 10, 2014 I like to refer to them as" 308 AR's" or what ever caliber they are loaded for , 260, 338 etc. <thumbsup>
Libertarian623 Posted February 10, 2014 Report Posted February 10, 2014 Welcome from Michigan. X2 to wash guy , a very valid point.
FAAWrenchBender Posted February 11, 2014 Report Posted February 11, 2014 (edited) Welcome,........what is your budget? May be best to purchase an entire upper. Be damn careful and research, the "AR10" term gets misused greatly and can get you into an upper that is not comparable with your DPMS lower. As far as those who state DPMS is better than AR10.........it's a Ford vs Chevy deal. Personally, you could not GIVE me a Chevy or a DPMS, bad experiences with both brands. Edited February 11, 2014 by FAAWrenchBender
Magwa Posted February 11, 2014 Report Posted February 11, 2014 They are all good in their own way I own DPMS simply because of cost and the fact they take P-mags I love my gun.... a budget must be established and barrel length etc what are you trying to achieve? Welcome from the Free state of Idaho...
98Z5V Posted February 11, 2014 Report Posted February 11, 2014 Look at these & see if there is a configuration you like. http://blackthorneproducts.com/cart/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=8_29 No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. Do NOT look at that place. For anything. Here's just a Google runthrough on Blackthorne/Vulcan/Hesse... https://www.google.com/#q=blackthorne+vulcan+hesse Don't even buy something from that place, if it's for your worst enemy. That place is a steaming pile of $hit.
Cali_Ed Posted February 11, 2014 Report Posted February 11, 2014 Get a matching upper then look for a high end barrel for it. My 2 cents
greenmist Posted February 11, 2014 Report Posted February 11, 2014 I have never built or really dealt with the ar-10. I have a dpms lower and I am looking into starting my new build. Was hoping for some guidance on what type of uppers to look into. Want something higher end and very reliable OK, ASSUming you are going to stick with a DPMS upper, here's a good research point to begin in, in the DPMS tech section right here in this forum. 1.) What is your budget, or is this a long-term (6-18mos) build wherein you're open to really $$ components? 2.) What will be this rifle's general purpose? All-rounder, hunt, paper, 3-gun, duty,...etc.. 3.) How patient are you? I don't know enough about DPMS specs to say ..." try checking out Xxx suppliers." Figure out barrel length/build from question #2: if it's an all-rounder perhaps a 16" carbine barrel, but if it's for long distance paper it's probably going to be a 20"+ HB build. I just passed on a used 24" HB DPMS build with lots of JP components, at $1100. I don't know enough about them to make a good judgement decision, guy selling seemed a little itchy/sketchy, so I passed. Research here, and learn some more...

FaRKle! Posted February 11, 2014 Report Posted February 11, 2014 If you want to drop some $$$ you could grab a PWS MK2 upper. I enjoy mine and it shoots sub-MOA with match ammo. You may want to measure the space between the pivot pin ears though as the pivot pin support on their upper receivers tends to run on the large side (I tried my upper on my friend's DPMS lower and it didn't fit, and it barely fit in Bubbasks' lower).
