WEAPON STORAGE??

JJ109

Recommended Posts

So my buddy stopped by the other to check out my 308 build . While here he notice I store my AR's with trigger hammers in locked " ready " but safety "on" firearms unloaded. He said "your ruining the springs in the gun". I advised him they dont wear or lose tension while compressed, its when you actually use the weapon is when the springs wear. I also said I could be wrong on this subject , but im going to look into it.

So with that being said, what's some of your feed back on this issue ? How do you guys store your weapon?

And yes by the way I do have a fully ready weapon for self defense. Loaded but not chambered.

First off , its just not only the spring that has pressure on it , both the Trigger & Hammer Sears do so also . Sure , if you have well made FCG , like a Geissele , which are made of superior metallurgy , they will fair far better then a surface Hardened MilSpec FCG , but why subject ant FCG's Sear engaging surfaces to sustained pressure .

As far as the springs go , its a subject to ones belief , springs are made to have so many compression cycles , keeping them fully compressed or close to it , may or may not alter that life span . All springs are not made equally , some may wear our or lose their required tension early & some may last longer .

Empty, if in the safe & Hammer down & I rotate all loaded , cocked & locked firearms on a regular basis .

I have no children in the house , so I can do what ever I want with firearms .

Yea i have a short barrel tactical mossberg 500 shotgun for my greeting the home intruder weapon. I keep it 3  double00 in the tube but nothing chambered.

I also do not have children in the home yet. But things may change LOL.

I guess I never thought about, how about your action? Locked back or closed? Both my AR's are in the safe open action with a mag in them.

i too don't have any kids in the house and had a few guns stashed in easy access till the neighbor kid started having the cops come to his house, I heard he was threatening to kill himself. So I hid my shot gun and my pistol alittle better, I've been wanting one of those biometric safes but haven't bought one yet. Idk if it's a nation wide law or a state law but if a minor gets ahold of your gun and it's loaded your liable for the out come, even if it's a break in

Interesting topic.

We have several firearms staged throughout the property, all of which are kept in condition 1.

Everything else is kept cleaned, in the safe, in condition 4.

A set of loaded magazines for the usual suspects are kept readily available, and the rest are housed in the gun room, unloaded.

Similar for me. I have a few AR mags loaded. Everything in the safe is sitting at rest. Handgun is the only thing out of the safe and it's got a loaded mag in it with extra mags nearby. Not chambered. I have a boy who is almost 6 who knows not to touch it, and a very curious 17month old who I can't trust. If I don't have time to chamber a round....I wasn't going to have time anyways. Same goes for getting startled awake. If I'm not awake enough to chamber one, I'm not awake enough to properly identify the target and I'm probably already screwed.

I don't worry about the springs in anything. If it's a concern, they're cheap. Change em out every so often if you need to for peace of mind.  Being that none of my guns are kept cocked, I really only need to worry about the mags.

Magazines all stay loaded, weapons locked in the safe are bolt closed and hammer down. Everything out is cocked, locked, and ready to rock.

Yeep me too !

I have a 130db siren hooked up to my alarm system. So if a door , window opens or if someone walks in front of the motion sensor i know im grabbing the shotgun and chambering a round... It also has a 1000 lumen tactical flashlight to blind the hell out them

If you take the flash hider off of that beastly DD of yours, you won't need the flashlight! :laffs:

My general hunting and plinking and training firearms are locked away in a built in gun safe, all empty, cleaned lubed and hammers down.

.380 double action only loaded chambered and handy, always. .40 chambered uncocked and safety locked on, this semi auto is single and double action and everyday carry close at hand 24-7. I also have a handgun in each automobile, S&W .38 special  and .357 Ruger service six. both loaded with 38 special +P hollow point.

Yes I reckon you could call me a Deplorable, born again, fiscal compassionate conservative, Bible thumping Christian, retired oil field gun nut-NRA life member , brown shoe Marine Corps trained.... tried and true Texican....And I have already decided whom I will Vote for, and I have never missed voting in a general election since 1960.

This, mostly  ^ ^ ^ .  But all the handguns are Kimber 1911 loaded with HST Federals.  +1 on the Deplorable, born again, fiscal compassionate conservative, Bible thumping Christian, retired military-industrial complex nut-NRA life member , brown shoe military trained.... tried and true Texican....And I have already decided whom I will Vote for, and I have never missed voting in a general election since 1976.  (edited for truthfulness)

I kind of revel in being deplorable, because I don't have any hired armed guards.

I never voted for a Clinton and I never will.
