What's an ideal AR 10 setup? As far as barrel length vs stock...I shot my buddies ar10 and it felt like I was shooting my airesume rifle. I would like to reduce recoil as much as possible. It's a Hog Hunting rifle project. I've been using a 338 Lapua round bolt action...scoped myself a few times with the followup shots.

Need something new. The 338 is good for long range but I want a good semiautomatic.

What do you guys think? Length for barrel...stock...hydraulic damper.

All depends what style hunting you do. Are you sitting in a blind? Are you driving them with dogs? What ranges are you taking shots from? All this is going to play into your build.

I personally would build a flexible hunting rifle knowing I could set up in a blind with a bi pod or bag and still be able to drive them. So I would want something light, probably stick with a 16" or 18" barrel to keep the weight down.

now you want to reduce recoil as much as possible, there are a few considerations to think about.

weight affects recoil, lighter the weapon, the more recoil. but then again you don't want a weapon that is to heavy. where the weight is located; if the weight is farther forward there will be less muzzle rise, making it easier for follow-up shots. but then there is the fatigue of having a front heavy weapon if not shooting supported. so a good balance for you based on these considerations is important, and the length of the barrel will affect all of this.

muzzle brake: makes it a bit louder to the shooter, but your best bet at eliminating recoil.

low mass bolt carrier group: the lighter the weight moving around in the weapon, the less recoil you will have as the weapon functions. doesn't affect it as much as other things, but it does help.

caliber choice: what caliber do you plan on going with? some recoil more than others as I am sure you know from shooting 338. this depends on the size of game you are shooting as they grow bigger in some places than others. if you want to help reduce recoil in this department, shoot what you need, don't go overboard on a big round. if you aren't sure, well pretty much everyone here will agree that .308 is a do it all round for the most part.

as for a hydraulic dampener, idk about that one. I have never tried one, so someone else will have to comment on that.

I know, a lot of what I have said leaves you with more questions. but basically we need more information. like JJ asked, are you shooting from a blind or driving them? what caliber do you plan on using? how long of shots will you be taking? I have seen hog hunting videos where a guy empties a whole mag on a heard of hogs; so how many shots do you plan on taking at once (this will effect the barrel you will want)?

What about an AR chambered in .338LM?

I just might know where to find one.

Don't be silly!  If there were such a thing, Tom would already have one four or five.

Welcome to the forum feel free to post in the intro section

I gotta agree with trooper and JJ, left the door pretty wide open we need to narrow it down a bit, but there is now holy grail of 308 caliber ar's

Okay, well then, now you have to explain what's wrong with Tom.

A perfect AR 10 comes with free ammo, barrel that increases in length automatically and shrinks to 16 inchs when inside a phone booth gun fight. Shoots .001 groups all the time and kicks like a mouse and cleans itself as well.

Did I leave anything out, maybe puts up the targets as well and has a beer cup holder.

What about changing the oil on the motorcycle? Armalites will do that.

lol. you guys are gonna scare the new guy away. lol.

Don't worry Bates, there are no better smartasses out there to help you with a build, but they will never take anything serious. lol.

"Bates" is the second half of my favorite pastime.

The .308 is sooo much more versatile than the smaller AR15 calibers. You can honestly go as light and small as you want, or as long and heavy as you can hold. Open sights, red dots, extreme magnified optics. Shot mags, full mags, drums mags. Collapsible stocks, fixed stocks, adjustable stocks.

I honestly wish there was just ONE optimal rifle to be built. It all comes down to your mission. What do YOU want to do with it?
