T-Posts are the way to go, out here in the desert. 6ft t-posts are cheap, and I can get them at Ace Hardware, or any tractor Supply. About $6 each. T-posts can take some abuse, too - they can take some shots, take holes in them, and last awhile before they (literally) get shot in half or break. When they do... I got my $6 out of them.

All you need is one of these 16lb t-post pounders from Tractor Supply, ad you're set. :thumbup:

Looking at that thing brings back nightmares of my youth. Driving TPosts in 95F and 90% humidity. Spent a summer in school putting up barb wire fences with no PTO driver! Built up my chest and shoulders, though.

Eventually, you make the t-post go in... and you beat that rock beneath the surface into submission... That's not HARD work... that's STUBBORN work... :lmao:

It sucks even more, getting those t-posts back OUT - after you pounded them in through a rock... @Matt.Cross has done that rodeo before, too. He's helped set up more desert shoots than any other person that's been to them... Because he's a sucker for punishment, and always comes out in the spring, too... :laffs: :hail:

There are 2 very compelling reasons to be a sucker for punishment: #1. I get to hang out with you rat bastages and.... #2. It's very satisfying to hear (and see) a bullet strike steel at significant distance.

Beating a desert rock into submission is also fairly satisfying, albeit tiresome.

@Matt.Cross is a true American hero. I can honestly say, I’m damn glad he had a chance to meet me.

hopefully he heard that story enough times to know what it means. I’m truly honored to have camped with the guy and look forward to doing so again some day.

I've heard that story multiple times, and the catchphrase still makes me laugh every bit as hard as "Don't waste it, spit it in my mouth!".

The Fall Shoot was awesome, but I'd be lying if I said it wasn't diminished somewhat by your absence. I lost count of how many times Tom and I both said "Dirk would have the hardware and brains to solve this issue..."

While it might take the 'fun' out of it it would be easy enough to adapt a ground rod pounder to to the work...

Don't doubt it brother - that happened. Several times...

I had to work yesterday, still backed up on work. Having the Fireman out for 5 weeks, and just me back there - sucked. He's been back one full week now, but it's gonna take us another 2 weeks to get everything caught up. I couldn't get the time off to jam over there. Hell, we closed at 1 yesterday, but I left at 2...

I just need to take a random weekend and drive on over.

One of many jobs was installing cable 35 yrs ago. In the worse fukin areas of the city. If that wasn't bad enough for the times I had to sink a ground with a BFH cutting sharp with a grinder made it a little easier. Of course it was in the winter.

LMFAO about the targets, same thing happened on the East coast meet up. Hit the legs even cut a piece out of the link on the chain and left the rest. :lmao: good time's

Used post hole digging tool as a kid. Put in a fence line and a horse corral. Did construction in Phoenix in the 80's and used a 5hp 2 man gas powered post hole auger. When you caught a rock it would throw you.

And when you hit caliche it doesn't do a damn thing but sit there and bounce around! A heavy equipment type auger might get through that stuff but the only thing us low budget guys can utilize is those digging bars that Doc posted! That gas powered post hole digger is for puzzies anyway! :thefinger:

I

Using one of those SOBs on a job led to a 50% hearing loss for me in the days before ear protectors. No OHSA back then. Right about the rocks throwing you. Plus the vibrations froze your hands into claws. Would take an hour for them to straighten out at the end of the day.
