Effin animals

I went out to play with my dog the other day, and I noticed he had some bloody spots in his fur. My first instinct was an animal got in the yard (TactiCat?). He got weaker and nearly stopped eating.

I got him to the vet yesterday. Holy shiit things went downhill fast. The tech working on my dog said she cried while shaving him because he was in so much pain. The sores cover his entire torso, all of them open/bleeding.

Well, $700 later, and a biopsy on its way to the lab, my dog is home and I still don't know what wrong with him. I had a fishing trip planned this weekend... that's not happening. I thought I was buying a new handgun this week too... that's also not happening.

As I mentioned on your FB, it looks like birdshot from the photos. No pellets though?

I worked with a veterinarian whose dog was shot at CLOSE range with birdshot.  He was able to save the dog.  The scars though looked just like these sores healed over.  Every once in awhile another pellet would work its way out.

When I lived closer to the country, we'd hear about ranchers using rock salt in their Shotguns. Not possible here.

We have a couple possible ideas. One, it could be a reaction from something at the groomer. Two, we never rule out cancer. Three, mites are still a possibility but the vet thinks unlikely. Four, dogs can get bad eczema and this may be a real bad case.

I live in a small suburb. My dog never leaves the yard and I've been home from work the entire time.

I'm hoping this is just allergy related or maybe some nasty heat rash that he irritated. All I know is that the vet bill had completely wiped my "toy" fund out for a while.

My wife had a dog that developed a bad  food allergy and she had to change to a lamb and rice (expensive high dollar food) diet.  They did a skin scrap test and that is what they came up with.  It cleared it up.  The only difference is that they didn't have the pain issue you are describing.  I am curious to see what the lab comes back with.

They're worth it.  My Rott got tagged by a car one rainy night in WA.  Fucker snuck out while I was working in the garage.  I only looked away for a few minutes, and he was gone - usually sitting right by my side.  I walked out back and called for him, nothing.  I noticed him going around the other side of the house.  I get back in the garage, and he's sitting there.  I called him, and he wouldn't come to me.  I thought that was odd.  I walked over to him to pat his side, and he winced.  He coughed a little, and some blood came up.

Off to the vet we go, late at night emergency visit.  Couple x-rays and an MRI later, and we get a bottle of antibiotics handed to us.  Nothing broken, bruised ribs and lung, and blood seeping from the lung.

That was 2 grand.

He was worth every penny.  <thumbsup>

Rob, I was seriously thinking birdshot for awhile, but didn't want to say it...

One of our rescue St Bernards developed similar looking lesions around his hind quarter out of the blue and a little later started limping. Turned out to be cancer. We only had the big guy for a year before we had to put him down.

I hate that.  St. Bernards are a wonderful breed.
