These are not bb guns we are fiddling with so please take a moment to stop and think about what you are doing. This also goes for reloading too.  If in doubt stop and ask somebody else. Don't want a brothers face behind a wreck like this.....

If the bolt isn't fully rotated in the barrel extension, and the bolt carrier isn't fully forward, then the firing pin is too short to reach the primer.

There's much debate all over the 'net about out-of-battery explosions - but the above is the truth.

If those conditions aren't met (bolt fully seated in extension, BCG fully forward), then the firing pin hitting the primer "early" isn't what's causing something like that.

I'm just sayin'.

From the pic the bolt looks to be in the extension still. Would like to know what happened. What about a squib just beyond the gas port ?

Weak/cracked BCG maybe? Looks like it split right down the middle where the gas key screws are, starting at the gas chamber in the BCG.

I kind of wonder whether its a 300 blackout fired in a 223 barrel. slam the forward assist a couple times to get it to chamber by pushing the bullet back into the case and whammo when you pull the trigger

Someone just posted a photo of a .300 BO fired in a 5.56 bull barrel.  Rifle was hosed, barrel looked pretty good.

They did a cut-a-way on the barrel and the .308 bullet had stretched out to about 3"!  And sized down to .22 of course.

Incredible!

Wrong powder would do it , but some thing had to happen with pressure ,because as noted , the bolt is still locked in the bbl. extension . Blocked or plugged barrel ?  Did you see the one where some one left the cleaning rod in the bore , that thing blew pretty good .
