Sharkey Posted December 17, 2014 Report Posted December 17, 2014 I was Army, State Police, a lifetime volunteer fireman and a number of other things in my life and never have I needed, or even SEEN a need for a "strobe" function on a damn weapon light. Other than perhaps as an indication of a man down (to help him be found), is there an actual real life situation where you guys would prefer a strobing light over either a pressure switch or a simple on/off switch to control your beam with? I don't get it and I think all of the light manufacturers are throwing that out there to attract the "tacticool" demographic rather than real life users. I could just be out-dated but do the new instructors teach "strobing" approaches or something I'm not seeing? What gives here?
shepp Posted December 17, 2014 Report Posted December 17, 2014 I've got one that even throws S.o.S. My take on the strobe is its disorienting even more so than a solid beam.
blue109 Posted December 17, 2014 Report Posted December 17, 2014 (edited) not sure about any defensive value....possibly easier to get sometimes attention in a crowded room? looks cool when I have to break-dance fight somebody. Edited December 17, 2014 by blue109

Thick chicks and baby oil should be included with "strobe function" tactical lights. At least mentioned in the instructions.
Robocop1051 Posted December 17, 2014 Report Posted December 17, 2014 The theory is the strobe disorients and prevents the subjects eyes from adjusting to the change in light.
Sisco Posted December 17, 2014 Report Posted December 17, 2014 Strobes can also trigger epileptic fits.
Robocop1051 Posted December 18, 2014 Report Posted December 18, 2014 A seizure is definitely disorienting. ..
shibiwan Posted December 18, 2014 Report Posted December 18, 2014 (edited) you can mount a Bell Lumina 500 ($16 on amazon)/iFlux bike light on an extra 30-mm scope ring. It has two brightness levels and a fixed strobe function. The concept behind the strobe is to make it harder for you to aim back at the light.... Here, your tacticool problem has been solved. <lmao> <laughs> Edited December 18, 2014 by shibiwan
crimsonfalcon07 Posted December 18, 2014 Report Posted December 18, 2014 It is pretty darn disorienting looking into a strobing light; considerably more so than just a steady bright light. I think this question would answer itself pretty quickly just experimenting with one and seeing what it feels like being on the receiving end. YMMV, of course.
planeflyer21 Posted December 18, 2014 Report Posted December 18, 2014 The lights with strobes I've seen are usually the 3rd click...after BRIGHT, low, then strobe. "Hold on a second here...<click-click-click> HA! NOW you can't see me!"
survivalshop Posted December 18, 2014 Report Posted December 18, 2014 Would not the strobe function disorient everyone with there eye's open ? I can see it as a rescue function , not a Tactical one . I guess with practice , you could get used to it , well maybe .

shibiwan Posted December 18, 2014 Report Posted December 18, 2014 Lasers and a disco ball on top of the smoke and flashbangs make the party complete!
edgecrusher Posted December 19, 2014 Report Posted December 19, 2014 Don't be a bunch of girls...... GAS GAS GAS!!!!!
Rsquared Posted December 19, 2014 Report Posted December 19, 2014 And who doesn't love a little CS for the holidays? <laughs>
392heminut Posted December 19, 2014 Report Posted December 19, 2014 I gave my son Josh a tactical flashlight with a strobe function after he got out of boot camp. He took it with him to his MOS school at 29 Palms and he found a use for the strobe! Check it out, Josh is the one sitting in the chair texting at the start and then using the strobe a bit latter. Now you know what your Marines do in their spare time! <lmao>
Rsquared Posted December 19, 2014 Report Posted December 19, 2014 I remember that Larry. Wasn't that during the "aloha shake" craze? Too damn funny. A buncha good-ass Marine's letting off a little steam.
survivalshop Posted December 19, 2014 Report Posted December 19, 2014 I guess there is a use for a strobe . <thumbsup>
392heminut Posted December 19, 2014 Report Posted December 19, 2014 I gave him the flashlight but I told him he had to buy his own damn batteries! <lmao>

A buncha good-ass Marine's letting off a little steam. Yeah, my wife and her coworkers did one at the hospital where she works. They actually got the CEO walking through in the vid! I LOVE seeing our service people letting off steam! There are quite a few videos on youtube of military doing the Harlem Shake, Call Me Maybe and Gangnam style. Great stuff!
