THAT is some true schit right there! I was substitute teacher in a constitution class several years ago and the teacher left a quiz on the Bill of Rights for them to do. Afterwrds I was supposed to go over the questions with them. They all thought it was a fukkin joke and took nothing serious. I told them what scared the schit out of me was that they would all be able to vote in a couple of years and they were absolutely clueless about politics and government. Those dipschits told their teacher I was RACIST!!! WTF has racism got to do with me calling them out on their political intelligence???

Racist is just a catchword for these kids nowadays, they have no clue what it actually means or how to use it.

I see a lot of scary people in my daily job.  I like to interact more than just "which is better, 1 or 2?"  There are some people to be hopeful for in all age groups.  But there are more who are just plain morons and have no business helping to decide who represents us in the government.

I know that being born in the US makes someone a citizen, but maybe there should be a test at least once before you are allowed to vote.

Yes, I understand that you are supposed to be subject to the laws therein as well.  But that is unfortunately not the current interpretation of the 14th amendment.

This country's left and right coasts are definitely conspiring to screw over everyone in between. If it wasn't for the electoral college we'd already be duking it out in a civil war.

They used to have that. It was called school.

That is supposed to teach you.  A citizenship test at the end of high school as a prerequisite for voting would cure most of the country's problems.

At least they couldn’t vote. They’d still be our problem though.

If they can't vote for the people who promise more free stuff, it wouldn't be a problem for very long.  That is why the founders originally restricted voting to those who owned property.

I liked it when you had to pay a poll tax,  be a property owner to vote for any county or school board official that had a hand in setting and collecting taxes.   Another benefit was that jurors were picked from the poll tax roll.

Ancient, ain't I? LOL

The way things are now you might as well let your dog vote as the snowflake Social Arts grad that is  25 years old and living in their Mom's spare bedroom and attending **female cat hat protests against Trump vote, it jest ain't what's right folks!

** damn stupid grammer police anyway

I like what Robert Heinlein proposed: to vote, you serve your country first. Either you put in 2 years in the military or else you put in 2 years in an approved service organization (Peace Corps, Civilian Conservation Corps, or something similar). Those who won't serve can't vote.

Only problem with that is the government is incompetent, managing a program of that size would be a huge effort. That and the liberals would get another 2 years to indoctrinate more socialist. Socialist programs can’t fix the problems created by socialism.

And while I have no doubt the interviews were cherry picked for most shock value=likes/shares, I understand that this is becoming the new norm. Add to this the upsurge in willingness to commit violence for minor reasons and generally act like a nuisance and a picture is being painted of our species beginning to nosedive. We will reach the point where we either need to cull the lowest common denominator to restore balance, or Orwellian 1984 will be the only way to continue on with any semblance of a civilization.

Strong vote for pro choice here to begin that culling.

Yeah, but I hope you'll bear in mind Heinlein was a science-fiction author, not a politician. He was writing to amuse people.

Pretty scary when you realize that some science fiction authors make WAY MORE SENSE than any current politician, though.  Ain't it.

I dont know if id say he was just writing to amuse people. He had some things to say and scifi was his medium.

I watch the news and I think about this story often. basically a statistician who charts human behavior realizes we are circling the drain. Heinlein was a visionary.  Maybe he was onto something. You can read the plot summary in the wiki page.

Along with 1984, Clockwork Orange always comes to mind...

Atlas Shrugged and Brave New World are two more fiction books that have a political message. They had to be entertaining to sell but looking at what the Authors have said about their work it becomes obvious they meant to make a political statement.

I’m not familiar with Heinlein’s political leanings but I get the impression he did understand how to craft a message with fiction.

I hate to say it but entertainment in general does more to form political opinions in today’s youth than parents, a very sad state of affairs. The socialist propaganda machine has had free rein with entertainment in our western civilization for nearly a century now and they have been pretty effective.
