Does the bolt lock back on the bolt catch by hand? If not your recoil system is wrong somewhere.

I have 2 of those on AR pistols. No problems.

Also post a pic of your bolt face. Is the ejector face square? I was having that problem till I changed to a rounded head ejector.

Bushmaster and Aris rifle parts

I have built 2 guns with the Bushmaster 308 lowers from there . -
I have a rifle from them and built a 12" 308 pistol with their upper and lower. The carbine stocked lowers w/the wrong buffer and spring seem to be the main problem. My rifle all I did was replace the gas tube, install a Balastic Advantage barrel, and a LaRue MBT-2 trigger. None of that was needed to make the gun go boom.

Sounds like you're on the right track. You won't know if the heavier buffer will work w/a standard gas block till you try it. -

Brownells had some "retro' BCG's that didn't have forward assist grooves. Mine for the 308 from them doesn't. -
